Curly Hair Empowerment: Representations and Discourses About the Body/Aesthetics of Black Women
Abstract
This text is the result of the rereading of two dissertations: «Continuous training of teachers and ethnic-racial relations/AfroUneb: “experiences” narrated in Santo Antonio de Jesus-Ba,» defended in the Graduate Program in Education and Contemporaneity at the State University of Bahia, Salvador campus, and «Curly hair empowerment: a study on the body and aesthetics of black women who participated in the Cresp@s e Cachead@s group in Jequié-Ba,» defended in the Graduate Program in Ethnic Relations and Contemporaneity at the State University of Southwest Bahia, Jequié campus. It raises questions related to the empowerment of the body/aesthetics of black women and aims to promote a theoretical discussion based on black feminist epistemologies, involving intersectionality, experience, difference, and Afrocentricity, drawing on studies by González (1988), Pacheco (2012), Brah (2006), Scott (1999), Bairros (1995), and Collins (2018). Seeking to understand how these categories can enhance the construction of black women’s empowerment, specifically curly hair empowerment through the strengthening and affirmation of aesthetics and the body, this debate endorses the idea that despite the discrimination and hypersexualization of their bodies, we can observe that the feeling of belonging and identity strengthening has reverberated in positive experiences for many black women, as it is notable to observe a positive emphasis in the way they assume their subjectivities in their clothing, in their ways of speaking and even in how they position themselves when assuming frizzy hair. All this performance environment presents itself in its different social contexts based on what they experience in an exclusionary society.
