The IFMT and Its Margins: Mediations and Disputes in Scientific and Educational Practice

Abstract

The Federal Institutes were established to expand access to professional, technical, and technological education in Brazil's interior regions. As they pursue these objectives by promoting undergraduate research activities and developing applied research, they have also become a benchmark for free, high-quality public education. In the state of Mato Grosso, educators interviewed in a qualitative interpretive study argue that initiatives aimed at promoting the inclusion of historically disadvantaged populations living in peripheral regions coexist with practices that fail to uphold egalitarian ideals, revealing that the institution is permeated by ongoing mediations and disputes. These dynamics are embedded in power relations that connect the center and the margins, as well as the global and the peripheral. In this context, boundaries become increasingly blurred, particularly when innovative educational approaches and new conceptions of science foster debate and provoke conservative and exclusionary political reactions linked to economic perspectives that, directly or indirectly, contribute to environmental degradation.
