The memories of the eugenics movement in the symbolic field of health in Brazil

Abstract

This book is a memorial. In the History of Brazilian Medicine, such memories have been undervalued, and it has been more interesting to forget them. We understand that by bringing them into the debate in undergraduate and specialized courses aimed at training health professionals, complementary interests for professional ethical training stand out. For, although it specifically refers to a historical period (interwar), when using the Sociology of the symbolic field by Pierre Bourdieu, applied to the field of health, we contemplate the legacy in Brazil of the slave period, of eugenic and racist ideals that influence, why not say it, up to the present day, when we celebrate the bicentennial of our Independence. It is a living moment in our history that could not go unnoticed, especially today, when there is a focus on strengthening an ethical consciousness for antiracist ideals.
