Between the technical and the political: science and technology studies and the debate on expertise

Abstract

The article examines the debate on expertise that mobilized the field of science studies (Science, Technology and Society/ STS) in the first two decades of the twenty-first century. It called into question not only the research agendas and theoretical frameworks of the field, but also the political and social implications of the work conducted by scholars within its realm. The matter of expertise becomes particularly relevant both in situations where greater social participation in the public agenda involving technical knowledge is demanded and in the face of denialisms that attack the credibility of science. What role should STS, committed to highlighting the links between science and society, play in these scenarios? How to recognize the authority of scientists without reiterating the old positivist conceptions about science? We analyze two key moments in which the field focused on these issues: the discussion raised by the normative Sociology of expertise proposed by Harry Collins and Robert Evans in the early 2000s and the debates on ‘post-truth’ triggered in 2016, amid the rise of the new far-right. An examination of these discussions is necessary considering the contemporary challenges, both academic and political, involving the strengthening of scientific institutions as a crucial dimension of democracy.
