Freedom of teaching in Brazil and the election of president Bolsonaro

Abstract

Mario Losano presents the main political facts of the electoral campaign of the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, which are related to freedom of teaching. The author demonstrates how Brazilian universities were the stage of several protests against authoritarianism and fascism that Bolsonaro’s campaign had brought to public debate. In order to bring legal elements to the text, Losano describes the way in which protests at universities were handled by the Judiciary, because it is forbidden to carry out political propaganda at a public university in Brazil. In conclusion, Losano emphasizes the importance of judicial institutions to guarantee freedom of teaching in democratic societies and how the attempts to limit academic debate are not an exclusive Brazilian phenomena.
