Creativity in Z generation according to its social media activity

Abstract

Generation Z is the generation that uses the most social networks and stays online the longest daily. To analyse creativity in social media users, an exploratory qualitative and quantitative study was carried out. The sample, with 40 university students, carried out two experiments adapted from Guilford's alternative uses test to assess divergent thinking and completed a questionnaire. The results indicate a greater tendency for women to provide details in their solutions to problems. Also, gender seems to influence the ability to generate valid, different, and novel ideas in problem-solving depending on the object used in problem-solving. To some extent the results also suggest that seniority in the use of social media is favourably and moderately associated with elaboration, originality, and flexibility in problem-solving. They also show that fluency correlates favourably with flexibility and originality and negatively with elaboration. On the other hand, some social media activities are moderately and favourably associated with originality (playing online games and acquiring knowledge), elaboration (meeting people and making new friends, participating in competitions and talking about purchases made or planned) and fluency (playing online games).
