The Adaptation of Politainment to Youtube: The Use by the Spanish Political Parties during the Electoral Campaign of April 2019

Abstract

Politainment is a concept that describes the progressive adaptation of political and media actors to the logic of entertainment culture. This phenomenon has been extensively studied in the medium in which it was born, television; however, as digital platforms gain greater prominence as a source of political information, politainment finds in them a new space in which to develop. Thus, certain techniques related to this phenomenon are presented to political parties as a simple way to bring their messages to new audiences. This paper examines the growing translation and adaptation of the politainment to digital platforms such as YouTube, as well as to analyze its use as an electoral resource by the main Spanish political parties. It offers a content analysis of a sample of the videos uploaded to YouTube by the five main Spanish political parties during the electoral period of the April 2019 general elections. The results obtained show that the use of politainment techniques is not yet a majority on the platform as a whole, but that there are important differences in the degree to which the different parties resort to them.
