Intellectuals and power in México

Abstract

The article begins with a theoretical development about the intellectual figure, about his o her position within the historical time in which lives and, specially, about the relationship with power. Next, the particularities of the Mexican case are introduced. Different historical phases are established, the situation and characteristics of the most important intellectual’s groups or movements in each period (Colony, Independence, period between the last and the Republic restoration, the Porfiriato, the revolutionary Mexico, the post-revolution and the second half of the Twentieth Century) are described. The author finalized with a thought about the diverse perspectives of power regarding culture and emphasized the importance of keeping alive the exercise of culture as an instrument for resisting power.
