Abstract

This article analyzes the concept of loneliness through a narrative approach. For this purpose, the films Lost in Translation by Sofía Coppola and Her by Spike Jonze are compared. In both stories, characters harassed by loneliness can be seen. This work is supported, on the one hand, by Robert Weiss' theory on loneliness and, on the other, the methodology used by Donio-Bellgade et al. who designed a series of loneliness categories to analyze films. In this study the following have been used: 1) choosing to live alone by choice, 2) feeling alone living with others, 3) lack of social support and 4) depression and suicidal ideas. Based on these categories of loneliness, we analyze what happens to the protagonists of the two films.
