Descriptive study of the relationship among cinema, nutrition, and associated diseases

Abstract

The social impact of cinema can be studied on the influence of different patterns of behaviour such as eating behaviors. This descriptive and systematic study analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively the presence of topics related to nutrition and the different pathologies associated in recent Oscar winning films (2000-2015). The results showed that 32.0% of the movies presented characters or plots which had links with food, nutrition, and eating disorders (mainly obesity and anorexia nervosa). In addition, 23.0% of the studied films had actors/actresses who had to change their body weight very significantly for the character to play. By last, it highlighted the positive view about healthy eating habits in animation movies aimed at children and young people (representing 30.8% of all films).
