Milk Donor with Blindness: A Possible Challenge
Abstract Introduction It is essential to have strict criteria for the selection of milk donors to ensure the quality and safety of this biological product. The exclusion criteria do not include the diagnosis of blindness in the future donor. We present the first case in our setting of a blind donor, as well as the tools used during the interview. Description An abbreviated telephone questionnaire was used to assess compliance with the minimum criteria. A Braille translation was made of the most relevant information related to the extraction and conservation of the donated milk. Tactile training was carried out with the mother, consisting of detailed manipulation of all the elements of the pump guided by the hands of one of the professionals to ensure their correct identification and supervised training in hand hygiene. Finally, it was agreed to carry out a close telephone follow-up. Since acceptance, this donor has provided 26.6 liters to 51 recipients. Discussion It is necessary, in order to ensure equal access to the Milk Banks, to provide verbal information and to translate into Braille the documents related to the donation to blind women who are considering this possibility. It also seems mandatory to adapt the training tools for these women during the interview in order to obtain milk that meets the required quality criteria.
