Significant Reduction in Mothers’ Satisfaction with Pregnancy Care and Prenatal Breastfeeding Education during the COVID Pandemic
Abstract
Introduction: Due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, there were significant restrictions on face-to-face care and capacity in healthcare facilities, which has led to a decline in some aspects of healthcare quality and user satisfaction. The aim of this study is to assess the degree of satisfaction of the mothers with regard to the follow-up care of their pregnancy during the pandemic
Patients and Methods: 1 321 mothers who gave birth between March 2019 and May 2021. Retrospective descriptive study, based on surveys in the form of online forms.
Results: 42 % of the mothers considered their pregnancy care satisfactory compared to 58 % who considered it unsatisfactory. If we compare with the pregnancies attended before the beginning of the first confinement, the degree of satisfaction decreased significantly after March 14, 2020, from 75 % to 41 % (p < 0.001). The most frequently expressed causes of dissatisfaction were the poor preparation for childbirth and breastfeeding, the reduction in face-to-face visits to the centers, and the frequent prohibition of a companion during visits and medical examinations.
Conclusions: The restrictions imposed by the pandemic have significantly affected the satisfaction of pregnant women regarding the follow-up of their pregnancy and prenatal childbirth and breastfeeding education.
