Birth Care during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Restrictions on the Accompaniment and Care of Infected Mothers
Abstract
Introduction: The first protocols regarding delivery care and capacity restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic have been related to objectionable practices: precluding accompaniment in labour, speeding up delivery, separating babies from their mothers or delaying breastfeeding. The aim of this study is to evaluate to what extent these events may have occurred in our country.
Patients and Methods: 1321 mothers who gave birth between March 2019 and May 2021. Retrospective descriptive study, based on online forms surveys, on SARS-CoV-2 infection, accompaniment at delivery, mode of delivery, joint accommodation and infant feeding.
Results: We observed a significant increase in barriers to accompaniment at delivery from 14 March 2020: 19 %, compared to 5 % previously (p < 0.001). Among mothers infected with SARS-CoV-2 (17), 71 % were not allowed company compared to 18 % of non-infected mothers (p < 0.001); in 3 cases labour was induced or instrumented to accelerate second stage of labour and in 3 other cases babies were separated from their mothers and fed with milk substitutes in the Maternity ward.
Conclusions: During the pandemic there has been a significant increase in the impediment to accompanying delivery, significantly higher in SARS-CoV-2 infected mothers; we have also detected several cases of induction or instrumentation to accelerate second stage among infected mothers, and of separation and use of formula feeding.
