Breastfeeding in Deaf Women: A Literature Review
Abstract Introduction: Exclusive breastfeeding has rates too low all over the world. Breastfeeding rates in deaf women are considered to be even lower. Material and methods: A literature review was conducted to explore the barriers and support that deaf women encounter regarding breastfeeding. Studies were identified through a literature search from different databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Science Direct, Scopus, and Proquest between the years 2013 and 2023. The methodology followed the recommendations of Whittemore & Knafl. The quality of the studies was assessed using the CASPe tool (Critical Appraisal Skills Programme in Spanish). Results: Six articles out of the initial 403 were included in the review. The main barrier encountered by this group is communication problems associated with the lack of sign language interpreters or trained professionals. The main source of support is the help received from health professionals and family members. However, this support, in some cases, was perceived as a barrier. Conclusions: Deaf women need more support regarding breastfeeding. Accessible communication can help them achieve their breastfeeding goals and, although this is a legal requirement, it is not always provided.
