Food Supplements for Sleep after COVID-19. Comparison from 2019 to 2024

Abstract

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder worldwide. The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the dispensing of sleep supplements from 2019 to 2023, examine the current trends and consumption patterns of these products and promote sleep hygiene through health education. A retrospective and descriptive study was conducted. Data were classified according to their composition: valerian, melatonin or doxylamine. A positive and direct incremental relationship was observed between the passage of post-pandemic years and the number of dispensations of sleep supplements for treating insomnia. Furthermore, a prospective and descriptive study was conducted using questionnaires, to patients who were looking for sleep supplements for insomnia or sleep disorders. They were given guidance on sleep hygiene and an informative triptych. As the study was done on a small scale, we cannot guarantee adequate statistical power in the obtained results. However, these findings can serve as a basis for future studies with a larger sample, allowing for more robust and generalizable conclusions.
