Abstract

Introduction: Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare tumor of the head and neck (1%). It usually affects middle-aged people, without associated risk factors. It behaves like a slow-growing tumor, with high recurrence and distant metastasis. The treatment of choice is surgery with or without complementary radiotherapy. Clinical case and evolution: 36-year-old male ex-smoker, with paresis and atrophy of the left side of the tongue with ipsilateral lingual deviation, and left submandibular tumor. After complementary tests, the diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the base of the tongue was obtained. Surgical and later radiotherapy treatment was performed. During follow-up, the patient is stable with no signs of locoregional recurrence.
