Ocupación y organización del espacio en el Bierzo Bajo entre los siglos V al X

Resumen

RESUMEN: El objetivo de este trabajo es el estudio de la ocupación y organización del espacio en la comarca leonesa del Bierzo, en concreto del Bierzo Bajo, entre los siglos V al X. La delimitación de un espacio concreto y la utilización de un amplio abanico de fuentes escritas y materiales, nos permite profundizar y analizar la evolución del poblamiento con sus continuidades pero también con sus cambios y transformaciones desde la antigüedad hasta finales del siglo X. En contra de la hoy ya superada tesis despoblacionista de Sánchez—Albornoz y de la también cuestionada vía indigenista del paso al Feudalismo propuesta por Barbero y Vigil, observamos una continuidad en el proceso de ocupación sin que esto signifique que no se hayan producido cambios inherentes a todo proceso de evolución.En los siglos IX y X aparecen las primeras villas documentadas de la zona, ubicadas en territorio bergidense, en las vegas de los ríos, aprovechando la infraestructura viària de época romana y con unos términos perfectamente delimitados que denotan su origen antiguo. Se trata de un espacio intensamente ocupado y organizado por los propios pobladores de la zona, que desarrollan un proceso colonizador muy anterior al que van a protagonizar con posterioridad los señores feudales.ABSTRACT: The main objective of this work is the study of the occupation and the organization of space in the Leon territory of Bienio, concretely Bienio Bajo, between the 5th and 10th centuries. The delimitation of a concrete space and the use of a wide range of written and material sources allows us to go into depth and analyse the evolution of settlement with its continuities as well as its changes and transformations from Ancient times up to the end of the 10th century. As opposed to the now—refuted depopulationist theory of Sánchez-Albornoz and the equally questioned indigenist character of the transition to Feudalism proposed by Barbero and Vigil, we have observed a continuity in the process of occupation which does not exclude the changes inherent to any evolutionary process.In the 9th and 10th centuries the first documented villages of the area appear, situated in Bierzo territory, in the fertile valleys of the rivers, which exploit the infrastructure of roads from Roman times and with perfecdy delimited terms which denote their ancient origin. We are dealing with an intensely occupied area organized by the region's settlers themselves, who develop a process of colonization much earlier than that which the Feudal Lords protagonized later.
