The Beginning of Hip-Hop in Chile (1984-1987): Reception and Learning of a Foreign Musical Culture in Times of Dictatorship
Abstract
The article studies the reception and learning of hip-hop in Chile between of 1984-1987. The importance of this stage is explained by the assimilation of different subjectivities of this North American musical culture. They were fundamental for the later formation of bands and the emergence of the first recordings. The hypothesis of this work is that the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet created the necessary conditions for hip-hop to be deployed for the first time in Chile through different information channels (television, cinema and political exiles). The feasibility of this process was also due to the emergence of a new generation of young people who had integrated into their identity the changes that Chilean society was experiencing, especially with regard to musical taste because they felt more attracted to foreign musical forms. than those with a predominant social and political discourse.
