From Faith to the Pen: La Mennais’s Impact on Hugo’s Literature
Abstract
This article demonstrates that Victor Hugo’s Catholic upbringing profoundly influenced his political and religious worldview, reinforced by his closeness to intellectuals such as Lamennais and the Catholic circles of the Restoration. Through his correspondence with the Breton priest and his literary production, we have traced how this influence shaped his conception of faith, contributing to his progressive intellectual emancipation. The study also challenges the reductionist view of an abrupt break with religion, emphasizing the continuity of his concern for a more spiritual and less political Christianity. It likewise questions the dichotomy between an early Hugo, deeply religious and monarchist, and a later Hugo, liberal and anticlerical, showing instead a gradual evolution. Finally, it highlights the role of Lamennais as a structuring figure in Hugo’s youth, revealing the depth of an intellectual dialogue that left lasting traces in his work.
