C.ABSTRACT: Recent investigations about román settlements located at the north coast of Spain have renovated the traditional point of view, a little pesimist, that considered the Cantabric Sea as a «Mare tenebrosum », cióse, dangerous and with difficult transit. The archaeologic excavations realized at La Coruña, Gijón, Santader, Castro Urdíales an the Low Bidasoa área give new informations about urban and mercantil evolution of these centres. From our opinión, we consider litoral settlements of the Cantabric Sea included in a regional type of historie and economic dynamics, of which development had a great importance so much the maritime ways so the overland routes. In our current investigation it seems to make clear an earlier evolurion of the oriental zone settlements (Pais Vasco and Cantabria) whilst the true beginning of the Cantabric Coast happened from the Flavians. From the end of the Ist. Century A. D., archaeology shows a similar development in the whole zone which continúes without apparently interruption until VIth Century A. D.
