About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Zephyrus is an international scientific journal devoted to Prehistory and Archaeology. It was founded in 1950, is edited by the Departamento de Prehistoria, Historia Antigua y Arqueología, and published by Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca.

Zephyrus has the FECYT seal of quality, is indexed in WOS (AHCI and SCIE / SSCI), SCOPUS, Academic Plus Source, IBZ Online, Periodical Index Online, L'Anée philologique, Anthropological Literature, MLA - Modern Language Association Database, DOAJ and Dialnet and is evaluated in CARHUS Plus + 2014 (group B), Integrated Classification of Scientific Journals (CIRC), Directory of Open Access Journals, ERIHPLUS, GOOGLE SCHOLARMETRICS (2011-2015 Index h = 8),  LATINDEX (Catalog), MIAR (ICDS = 11), SJR SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR index 0.42; h index 9). The self-archive appears in: Dulcinea (blue color) and Sherpa / Romeo (blue color). Other databases in which it appears are America History and Life (1964-1967), BHA (Bibliography of the History of Art), CINDOC-ISOC, EBSCO, Historical Abstracts (1964-1967), Info-Latin America (ILA), International Bibliography of Books, Internationale Bibliographie der Rezensionen, Numismatic Literature, Reviews of Scholarly Literature and ULRICH'S.

It is published semi-annually and it covers original research papers, scientific news and important findings from various parts of the world, as well as reviews of quality monographs in its sections of Articles, Varia, Critical Notes and Reviews. The original manuscripts, evaluated by external reviewers through the ‘double blind’ system, are published in Spanish, English and French, although, exceptionally, originals submitted in other scientific languages are accepted. Each paper has a title, abstract, and keywords in English. Its open publication allows access to its content without restrictions.

Peer Review Process

The Editorial Team will acknowledge receipt of the submitted manuscript to the corresponding author. Once received and checked, the originals will be subject to a formal review to verify if the Submission Guidelines are met; if not, they will be returned for correction.

The originals received will be evaluated, through the 'double blind' system, by reviewers selected by the Editorial Board. Authors may suggest names of reviewers from which the Board may select some. The list of external reviewers who have collaborated in this assessment process is published annually.

Zephyrus has style reviewers responsible for ensuring grammatical correctness and adaptation to scientific style. The accuracy / ambiguity of titles, abstracts and keywords, but also of the text, will be especially monitored.

Given the complexity of the mechanisms and systems of evaluation, selection and editing of scientific journals and the heterogeneity of factors involved in them, the process is relatively agile.

Publication Frequency

Semiannual periodicity.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

No Charges for Levied Processing Contributions or for Publication in Open Access Format (APC)

The Journal does not levy charges for processing of articles, nor for editing them or publishing them in open access format [article processing charges (APCs)].

Volume of work received / published

Zephyrus receives annually more than a hundred proposals for articles. Out of them, the average acceptance rate is 20%. Each of the two annual issues has 220-240 pages in which the results of original research in Prehistory and Archaeology are presented.

Sections of the Journal

Zephyrus is articulated in several sections:

  1. Analytical index.
  2. Articles: which are based on a specific subject, site or aspect.
  3. Varia: which includes works of smaller scope within the field of the journal.
  4. Reviews.
  5. Other.

Commitment to Research Submitted by New Authors and Authors from Developing Countries

Zephyrus supports research from authors or research teams from developing countries, especially in Latin America, provided they are unpublished works of international relevance. The texts should be presented in Spanish, English or French.

We also show our commitment to novel authors from around the world who may submit article proposals, in the aforementioned languages, always fulfilling the requirements for the submission of papers. Proposals should be the result of original (i.e. unpublished) research with an international impact beyond the strict local interest and realm.

Permission to Self-Archive and Digital Preservation

Authors are authorized to publish on the internet (for example, in institutional repositories or personal web sites) after publication (in no case prior to the review, layout or even in the phase of proof-reading); in the event of embargo, immediately after this has expired. It is also permitted in cases in which the costs of APCs (article processing charges) have been paid to the Editorial Board. These measures are designed to foster the reading and citation of contributions and to achieve greater and faster dissemination of the work published (see The Effect of Open Access)

The Journal can be accessed from the two main repositories of the University of Salamanca:

This Journal uses the LOCKSS system to create an archive distributed among the participating libraries, allowing them to create permanent archives of the Journal with a view to preservation and restoration.
