ABSTRACT: An interproximal groove consists of a special wear observed in some past populations, which has been generally atrributed to the repeated use of a toothpick. The aethiology of these grooves could be related to cultural or therapeutic behaviour. Several samples of different periods (from the Upper Paleolithic to the Bronze Age), from the northeast of the Iberian Península have been studied. The mandible of Banyoles (45.000-100.000 BP, Girona) shows a typical interproximal groove in the left second molar, not previously described in this fossil specimen. This is the oldest evidence of a hygienical behaviour observed within this geographical área.
ER -
