THE Trafalgar, 1805: The Mythification of a Battle in History and Historiography. The Issue of Ship-To-Ship Combat

Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to examine the Battle of Trafalgar within the Napoleonic Era, ship by ship, vessel by vessel, action by action, as this research has been scarcely conducted, particularly using Spanish sources, and has generated considerable controversy. This goes beyond the often prevailing historical and historiographical mythologizing. Much has been said about Trafalgar, but very little about the reality of the naval engagements themselves, which cost thousands of lives. How did the battles unfold between the ships? What were the specific military actions that subsequently shaped so much of history? This text aims to shed light on these questions, primarily using Spanish sources with new theories and perspectives.
