Colonial Olympism and National Identity in Puerto Rico: The Imagined Community through Olympic representation

Abstract

Today, Puerto Rico is one of the few politically dependent but sportingly sovereign territories. This paper analyzes the impact of sport and Olympic representation as symbolic capital on the identity of Puerto Ricans. Participation in the Central American Games as us citizens marked a historical precedent of dual identity representation through sport in which us citizenship and Puerto Rican national identity were not mutually exclusive. From then on, the Puerto Rican Olympic delegation became the ambassador of the Puerto Rican “imagined community,” as an affirmation that the Puerto Rican nation survived despite its political subordination to the us. Colonial Olympism allowed Puerto Rico, despite its dependent status, to foster a sense of national identity at the expense of political nationalism. In this context, this article analyzes nine open and in-depth interviews through the practice narrative with key actors linked to Olympic sport and Puerto Rican politics. The interviewees represent the three main ideological positions regarding the political status of the Island. The diagrams of the sociological analysis of the discourses reflect how Puerto Rican identity at a cultural level condenses the discourses in opposition to the perception of a dual identity relegated to hyper-annexationism. The participation of the Puerto Rican Olympic delegation in the London Olympic Games sealed and traced the path by which colonial Olympism would become the safe conduct of the “imagined community” of a Nation without a State.
