Urban working class housing in nineteenth century Spain
Abstract
The migrations from country to city that took place in Spain in the middle of the nineteenth century involved many problems and brought about new situations in the cities, not the least of them related to housing. This was a situation that concerned different social sectors and political forces to different degrees, with highly varied and different solutions proposed that contrasted sharply with the timid response of the government. This article studies the measures proposed and/or adopted to try to palliate the overcrowding of the big cities as well as the attitudes taken by working class organizations as regards this problem.
