Project-Based Learning Through the YouTube Platform for Teaching Mathematics in Primary Education

Abstract

Project-based learning (PBL) is a methodology that can improve educational practice, as it offers strategies for students to learn through active and dynamic research in more realistic situations, culminating in the preparation of authentic and real products. The objective of this work is to verify the effectiveness of the PBL methodology in the acquisition of knowledge in the subject of mathematics subject in primary education and the improvement of student satisfaction. To this end, a didactic proposal that integrates five sessions and uses YouTube as a teaching resource has been designed and evaluated. A quasi-experimental research design with pre-test and post-test measurements was used, using experimental and control groups. The sample consisted of 40 5th grade students (aged 9 and 10) in primary education in a Spanish school. The intervention, focused on learning activities through various educational resources, presents positive results in mathematics. The differences found between the pre-test and post-test results in the experimental group are statistically significant and superior to those presented in the control group, so it is concluded that students who learn mathematics through the PBL methodology, integrating the use of YouTube, achieve more significant progress in their learning and are more satisfied.
