				<title>RESUMEN</title>
				<p>En los últimos años se han desarrollado y puesto en marcha estudios y protocolos de detección e intervención de fenómenos de agresividad virtual en adolescentes —ciberodio y ciberacoso, entre otros—. Este artículo va a abordar especialmente el segundo de los fenómenos, dada su relevancia en los últimos años. Existe un claro vacío en las estrategias de prevención del fenómeno del ciberacoso en la literatura científica, lo que podría explicar que muchas de las medidas llevadas a cabo no prevengan la violencia ni las consecuencias de esta. Con el objeto de dar respuesta a esta necesidad, en este trabajo se proponen y analizan críticamente algunas estrategias de desarrollo personal en adolescentes para hacer frente a estos fenómenos de agresividad virtual. La agresividad en la red es una realidad que surge por la interacción tanto de factores individuales como ambientales. Entre estos últimos está el contexto familiar, ámbito en el que el adolescente adquiere las habilidades necesarias para su socialización y madurez personal. Así, el clima familiar, el apoyo parental y el tipo de comunicación que se establezca entre padres e hijos se constituyen en algunos de los factores protectores para la agresión y la victimización en el ciberacoso. Por otra parte, el desarrollo de una personalidad madura se constituye en uno de los ejes fundamentales para la prevención de conductas violentas. Se propone el fortalecimiento del papel socializador de la familia, el cultivo de virtudes para la formación del carácter y habilidades de crecimiento personal, basadas fundamentalmente en el perdón, como las principales estrategias educativas para la prevención de la violencia entre iguales en la red.</p>

			<title>1. Introducción</title>
			<p>El odio y la agresividad en las relaciones se dan tanto en el ámbito digital como fuera de él. El fenómeno de la comunicación violenta no es nuevo en nuestra sociedad, sin embargo, la red ha propiciado nuevas formas de expresión de esta realidad, entre las que se encuentran el ciberodio y el ciberacoso. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo sugerir estrategias de desarrollo personal para hacer frente a fenómenos de agresividad virtual relacionados fundamentalmente con el ciberacoso y para promocionar una personalidad madura. Para ello se va a realizar una revisión sobre los principales factores que explican el fenómeno de la agresividad virtual en la red y del ciberacoso, con especial hincapié en el entorno familiar. Como se verá a continuación, se presentarán también las principales estrategias y programas de educación emocional para la prevención del ciberacoso de los últimos años. Para la revisión de la literatura se han considerado aquellos artículos publicados en revistas de impacto tanto en lengua inglesa como en castellana de los últimos cinco años. Para el caso de los programas de prevención se han tenido en cuenta especialmente los realizados en España. </p>
			<p>En la literatura científica se han abordado diferentes estrategias de intervención y de afrontamiento ante el ciberacoso (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Giménez-Gualdo, et al., 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B52">Martín y Martínez-Otero, 2020</xref>). Por su parte, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al. (2017, p. 198)</xref> y <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B90">Yudes, et al. (2020)</xref> señalan la falta de estrategias de prevención de este fenómeno en los últimos trabajos e investigaciones sobre el tema. En cuanto a la intervención y prevención del ciberacoso, recientemente se han destacado varias estrategias y métodos centrados en aplicaciones digitales (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B49">Lowry, et al., 2017</xref>), programas de inteligencia emocional (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B63">Motamedi, et al., 2017</xref>), de formación de los padres (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B76">Roberto, et al., 2017</xref>), de ayuda por parte de los estudiantes más mayores hacia los más jóvenes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Berne, et al., 2019</xref>) o programas para promover una navegación segura para reducir el ciberacoso vía WhatsApp basados en la mejora del clima de clase y el sentido de pertenencia a dicha clase por parte del estudiante (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Aizenkot y Kashy-Rosenbaum, 2021</xref>). </p>
			<p>En el caso de España destacan los programas de prevención de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Avilés (2017)</xref>, los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Garaigordobil y Martínez-Valderrery (2016</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">2018</xref>), centrados en el fomento de habilidades relacionadas con la empatía, la escucha activa, estrategias de control de la impulsividad y la ira, etc. En esta misma línea están los de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B82">Schoeps, et al. (2018)</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Díaz-López, et al., 2019</xref> y <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Carbonell y Cerezo (2019)</xref>, que se basan en el desarrollo de la inteligencia emocional en los adolescentes. Por otra parte, el programa propuesto por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Del Rey, et al. (2018)</xref> se dirige principalmente al profesorado. Está fundamentado en la teoría del comportamiento social normativo, la promoción de habilidades de autorregulación metacognitivas y la reflexión sobre las ideas/creencias de los jóvenes. El programa de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B89">Villarejo-Carballido, et al. (2019)</xref> parte del modelo dialógico de prevención y resolución de conflictos, que implica al conjunto de la comunidad educativa. </p>
			<p>Por otro lado, el programa propuesto por <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Ferrer-Cascales, et al. (2019)</xref> se basa en la tutoría entre iguales e implica a la comunidad educativa en su conjunto. Para ello toma como referencia la teoría ecológica del desarrollo de Bronfenbrenner, los principios de las teorías de la inteligencia emocional y la psicología positiva. El programa Prev@cib de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B68">Ortega, et al. (2019)</xref> tiene tres marcos teóricos: el modelo ecológico, la teoría del empoderamiento y el modelo de responsabilidad personal y social de Hellison, que promueve la responsabilidad compartida de todos los estudiantes en resolver este problema. </p>
			<p>A pesar de todos los programas que existen, como se puede apreciar, no se encuentran propuestas que intenten vincular casos de ciberacoso con una perspectiva educativa que atienda a la educación del carácter y a la promoción de virtudes y valores necesarios para el crecimiento personal. Ciertamente desde el ámbito educativo se puede hacer un ejercicio de prevención que aborde la educación de las emociones en adolescentes. Sin embargo, dicho ejercicio podría ser insuficiente porque las propias emociones son volubles. Por ello en este trabajo se destacará la relevancia del desarrollo de las virtudes que —siendo disposiciones estables del carácter— contribuyen a un crecimiento personal más sólido (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B74">Polo, 2013</xref>). También, será importante educar en el cultivo de relaciones interpersonales profundas y sanas en las que el perdonar y saberse perdonado es un punto clave. En relación con el perdón, en la actualidad se ha señalado la importancia de abordar la prevención y la reparación del daño en los casos de violencia en red (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B73">Pérez Ferrer y Pérez Vallejo, 2016</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Dans y Muñiz (2021, p. 21)</xref> han propuesto recientemente el perdón como estrategia de aprendizaje en situaciones de ciberacoso. Para ello se tomará en consideración la perspectiva arendtiana (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Arendt, 2005</xref>) sobre el perdón y se diferencia su sentido reparador y regenerador. Este se convierte, así, en un pilar fundamental para restaurar —reparar— los vínculos dañados y, a su vez, para contribuir al crecimiento personal —regenerando— a la persona.</p>

			<title>2. Ciberbullying, odio y agresividad</title>
			<p>El desarrollo de la llamada web 2.0 y de las redes sociales suponen una herramienta comunicativa de mayor alcance que permite un mensaje más personalizado e interactivo. Esto implica un cambio en la difusión de la violencia/odio de carácter más cualitativo que cuantitativo. No se trata tanto de que los posibles mensajes o contenidos violentos lleguen a más personas, como del alcance de los efectos perjudiciales y de cómo Internet potencia dichos efectos comunicativos, favoreciendo una espiral y escalada de violencia derivado de la interacción y posibles fracturas sociales (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B59">Miró, 2016, p. 95</xref>).</p>
			<p>El último informe sobre incidentes relacionados con los Delitos de Odio en España (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B58">Ministerio del Interior, 2019, pp. 6-8</xref>) pone de relieve algunos datos que hacen reflexionar sobre la necesidad de desarrollar las estrategias adecuadas para la detección, prevención e intervención de estos actos, especialmente en los más jóvenes. De acuerdo con el <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B88">UK Safer Internet Centre (2016)</xref>, el 82 % de los jóvenes de entre 13 a 18 años afirma haber presenciado algún tipo de odio online, y el 24 % haber sido víctima de este. Esto evidencia una normalización del discurso de la violencia en los jóvenes en el mundo virtual, que se manifiesta en el soporte a ideologías extremistas, formas agresivas o incluso como canal para compartir conductas de riesgo. </p>
			<p>Dentro del fenómeno del ciberodio, hay distintas manifestaciones como son el odio o el ciberacoso. El primero está definido por la <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B75">RAE</xref> (s/f, s/p) como «antipatía y aversión hacia algo o hacia alguien cuyo mal se desea». El odio se refiere al uso de formas de expresión como la humillación hacia una persona o grupo en base a características relacionadas con la raza, idioma, la religión, la etnia, la nacionalidad, la orientación sexual, el género o la discapacidad (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Recomendación General n. 15 sobre líneas de actuación para combatir el discurso del odio de la Comisión Europea contra el Racismo y la Intolerancia, 2015, p. 18</xref>). Este discurso parte de una serie de estereotipos o prejuicios y los difunde en el medio virtual, aprovechando el alcance que este tiene. En este caso —el odio— a menudo presenta una dimensión social, con un carácter estructurado y, a veces, inducido y organizado (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B59">Miró, 2016, p. 96</xref>). Por su parte, el ciberacoso haría referencia a aquellas conductas tales como hostigamiento, denigración o exclusión social que involucran un uso intencional de las TIC con el fin de causar daño hacia los iguales (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B87">Tokunaga, 2010</xref>). Este trabajo se centra especialmente en este fenómeno por su relevancia en los últimos años. Para ello, en primer lugar, se recogen aquellos factores que explican su aparición y desarrollo. Entre ellos se van a subrayar las características del contexto familiar. </p>
			<sec>
			<title>2.1. Por qué aparece el ciberbullying. Causas que lo originan</title>
			<p>Existen diversas teorías que tratan de explicar el origen de la agresión en el ser humano. De acuerdo con <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">López-Hernáez (2015, p. 682)</xref>, se podrían distinguir tres grandes teorías. En primer lugar, estarían las llamadas teorías biologicistas, que ven la agresividad como algo innato en el hombre y marcado por la genética. </p>
			<p>Otras teorías son las teorías ambientales o sociales que ponen el acento en causas exógenas (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Berkowitz, 1993</xref>) y ven la agresividad como una conducta aprendida. En estas teorías destacaría la de la frustración-agresión (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Dollard, et al., 1939</xref>), en la que la agresión sería una respuesta natural a una situación que causa frustración. Esta estaría siempre presente en cualquier comportamiento agresivo, siendo directamente proporcional al grado de frustración del individuo. Desde este punto de vista, la frustración sería una emoción que surge cuando hay una interferencia hacia el camino a una meta, y esta no se cumple. Esta teoría dio lugar a varias críticas y a que <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B57">Miller (1941)</xref> corrigiera la original. Así, la frustración no tendría por qué ser una condición necesaria para la agresión, pero sí podría facilitarla. </p>
			<p>En el contexto de este trabajo, el ciberacoso puede considerarse un medio de venganza para afrontar la frustración (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B79">Sánchez, et al., 2016, p. 22</xref>). Desde esta perspectiva, el fenómeno de la comunicación violenta no es nuevo en nuestra sociedad. El odio, en tanto sentimiento social, está relacionado con la violencia, en muchos casos como frustración ante determinados aspectos de dicha sociedad. Los adolescentes perciben el contexto digital carente de límites y reglas, potenciado, además, por el anonimato que otorga la red. Además, el entorno online propicia la desconexión moral entre el agresor y la víctima (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B91">Yubero, et al., 2017, p. 95</xref>). En este sentido, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al. (2017, p. 194)</xref> afirman que estas condiciones posibilitan el efecto de la desinhibición. Estos mismos autores apuntan a una serie de causas que el agresor plantea para llevar a cabo sus acciones como la represalia, la venganza, motivaciones internas como la ira, la culpa o los celos o la percepción de debilidad de las víctimas, entre otras. </p>
			<p>Por último, las teorías interaccionistas hablan de la interacción de ambos aspectos, los innatos y los ambientales (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">López-Hernáez, 2015</xref>). Este artículo va a tomar como referencia la llamada teoría ecológica del desarrollo de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Bronfenbrenner (1979)</xref>, que señala cómo la conducta es el resultado de la interacción entre el individuo en desarrollo y su ambiente. Se habla, por lo tanto, de la interacción de factores personales y ambientales. En ella se presta especial atención a los distintos microsistemas en los que el adolescente se integra y convive, especialmente la familia y la escuela. Desde esta perspectiva, no es de extrañar que fenómenos como el ciberacoso comprendan una serie de factores relacionados con las particularidades cognitivas y socioemocionales del individuo, además del contexto familiar, comunitario o escolar, que conforman sistemas que a su vez interactúan en el desarrollo del niño y/o joven (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B51">Madrid, et al., 2020, p. 69</xref>). Uno de estos sistemas sería el escolar, donde tienen lugar una serie de relaciones interpersonales que constituyen la convivencia escolar. Este sistema social de iguales moldea la personalidad individual y social de los alumnos, así como el aprendizaje de la ciudadanía (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B69">Ortega Ruiz, et al., 2012, pp. 18-20</xref>). No obstante, el presente estudio se va a centrar fundamentalmente en el ambiente familiar para entender el comportamiento violento del adolescente.</p>

			<title>2.2. Factores familiares en el ciberbullying</title>
			<p>La familia es el agente más importante en la socialización primaria, donde el niño adquiere las normas de conducta, valores y virtudes necesarias para la convivencia y para su ajuste en sociedad (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Bas y Pérez de Guzmán, 2010, p. 45</xref>). En los últimos años, varios autores han revisado la relación de variables familiares y bullying o cyberbullying (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Buelga, et al., 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Chen, et al., 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B66">Nocentini, et al., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Machimbarrena, et al., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Garaigordobil, 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B72">Pérez-Fuentes, et al., 2019</xref>). Con respecto a los estilos parentales, la literatura científica señala los democráticos como protectores contra el ciberacoso, mientras que estilos como el autoritario, permisivo o negligente se relacionan tanto con la victimización como con la agresión (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Cerezo, et al., 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B39">Gómez-Ortiz, et al., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Machimbarrena, et al., 2019, p. 45</xref>).</p>
			<p>Uno de los aspectos fundamentales es el de la comunicación familiar. La comunicación se constituye no solo en un factor protector de estos fenómenos (relacionado con la autoestima o los sentimientos de soledad), sino que también va ligado a la transmisión de información y revelación de problemas por parte de los niños y jóvenes. El trabajo de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B92">Yubero, et al. (2018, p. 150)</xref> apunta a que aquellos adolescentes que presentan una comunicación evitativa con sus padres se involucran más en comportamientos problemáticos. Por otra parte, la comunicación familiar se constituiría en factor de protección frente a la violencia escolar y las consecuencias del ciberacoso, así como en las estrategias empleadas en estos casos (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B64">Murphy, et al., 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B67">Offrey y Rinaldi, 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Garcés, et al., 2020</xref>). </p>
			<p>En cuanto al apoyo parental, en la literatura científica este aparece vinculado con una menor frecuencia de ciberagresiones en jóvenes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B54">Martínez, et al., 2019</xref>). De acuerdo con <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Livazovic y Ham (2019, p. 7)</xref>, una baja calidad de vida familiar puede predecir la cibervictimización, mientras que las relaciones familiares de calidad predicen negativamente que el ciberacoso se perpetre. Por otra parte, la escasez de bajas relaciones de calidad puede indicar altas posibilidades de formar parte de conductas de ciberacoso. </p>
			<p>El estudio de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B71">Perasso, et al. (2020, p. 1)</xref> encontró que el apoyo familiar constituía un factor protector y mitigador contra la victimización en el ciberacoso. los hogares disfuncionales —con conflictos, en los que existe falta de apoyo parental, la comunicación es evitativa u ofensiva— se relacionan con la victimización y agresión online (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B55">Martins, et al., 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B62">Moreno-Ruiz, et al., 2018</xref>). Familias con alta cohesión entre sus miembros, consistencia en las normas, un clima de comunicación y confianza cálido y cercano, se constituyen en entornos protectores contra el ciberacoso (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Machimbarrena, et al., 2019, p. 50</xref>). </p>
			<p>Vistos los principales factores familiares que explican el ciberacoso, a continuación, se van a abordar, las características relativas a la madurez psicológica. La ausencia de un carácter maduro puede propiciar ciertas conductas que desemboquen en relaciones abusivas y de acoso hacia el otro. Por otra parte, no se puede entender la promoción de una educación del carácter sin abordar este concepto, clave en el crecimiento personal y en la educación familiar.</p>
			<p>Según <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B53">Martínez Priego (2018)</xref>, se llama madurez al «nivel de desarrollo armónico de la personalidad en el que existe suficiente correspondencia entre la edad cronológica y psicológica, en íntima conexión con la realidad vital —el entorno real— de la persona» (p. 154). La madurez como tal no es algo acabado, sino que es crecimiento, ha de ir acorde a cada etapa o fase de la vida, así como a las condiciones que se presentan. </p>
			<p>El concepto de madurez psicológica incluiría tres componentes principales de acuerdo con <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B61">Morales (2014, p. 2)</xref>: la orientación al trabajo, esto es, la capacidad para hacerse cargo de las propias responsabilidades tanto en el ámbito académico como en el de la vida ordinaria, la autonomía y, por último, la identidad, que se refiere al conocimiento que el adolescente tiene sobre sí mismo, sobre aquello que lo define y diferencia de los demás. Esto último es especialmente importante durante la etapa adolescente, donde se está consolidando la propia identidad. La identidad está relacionada con la autoestima, la confianza en uno mismo y la estabilidad emocional. Una identidad no consolidada o difusa puede dificultar la toma de decisiones vitales, el propio proyecto de vida o las relaciones interpersonales. </p>
			<p>De acuerdo con <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B81">Sarráis (2013, p. 35 y p. 67)</xref>, las características de la madurez psicológica serían la autoestima, seguridad, autoconocimiento realista, autocontrol voluntario, independencia emocional o libertad interior. En cambio, las características de las personas inmaduras serían el sentimiento y complejo de inferioridad, la inseguridad, la desconfianza, el odio, la ira, o la frustración, entre otros. En este sentido, muchos de los comportamientos agresivos en la red se relacionarían con la ausencia de un carácter maduro, siendo el odio, la ira o la frustración las señales más relevantes. </p>
			<p>Una persona es madura cuando es capaz de movilizar sus recursos personales para afrontar las condiciones y retos vitales que se le presentan. Esto implica realismo y un buen conocimiento propio y de la realidad. Asimismo, la afectividad tiene un papel fundamental en el desarrollo de la madurez. Implica conocimiento propio, especialmente de la propia dinámica afectiva y de las respuestas emocionales que se generan ante los estímulos. Por tanto, es clave la influencia de la propia percepción de la inteligencia emocional por parte de los padres para el desarrollo emocional del niño o joven (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B80">Sánchez-Núñez, et al., 2020</xref>). Respuestas desproporcionadas pueden denotar cierto grado de inmadurez, por ejemplo. En este sentido, fenómenos como la baja tolerancia a la frustración o la impulsividad se encuentran entre los factores individuales que explican el comportamiento de muchos ciberagresores (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Bartrina, 2014, p. 388</xref>).</p>
			<p>Siguiendo a <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B53">Martínez Priego (2018, pp. 155-156)</xref>, la personalidad madura debe apoyarse en cuatro rasgos que pueden analizarse tanto desde el punto de vista antropológico como psicológico. El primero sería la capacidad de afrontar lo arduo. Desde la psi&#173;cología se vería como la capacidad de afrontamiento (resiliencia), y en antropología se hablaría de la fortaleza. El segundo rasgo es la capacidad de ir más allá del simple placer o de la inmediatez. Sería la capacidad de retardo en psicología o de templanza desde la antropología. El tercer rasgo es la capacidad de reconocer al otro como otro yo. Se refiere a la comprensión de la realidad personal del otro. Se habla de la empatía y, antropológicamente, está relacionado con la justicia. El último rasgo de una personalidad madura es la capacidad de decidir atendiendo al sentido de la realidad. Se vincula con la virtud de la prudencia.</p>
			<p>Según lo explicado, uno de los ejes fundamentales que contribuyen a la prevención de conductas violentas en la red es el desarrollo de una personalidad madura. También se ha señalado el papel esencial de la familia en el proceso de adquisición de esta madurez. En lo que sigue, se sugieren algunas estrategias de crecimiento personal orientadas a esa madurez como una clara prevención de posibles conductas de ciberbullying.</p>

			<title>3. Estrategias de crecimiento personal frente al ciberacoso</title>
			<p><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al. (2017, pp. 198-200)</xref> han destacado la relevancia y el vacío de estrategias de prevención del fenómeno del ciberbullying en la literatura científica. Con el fin de hacer una propuesta al respecto, hablan de la necesidad de trabajar en la formación de la autoestima, la empatía, los principios individuales y sociales de los derechos humanos, las habilidades sociales, la resolución de conflictos, la prevención de la violencia de género y la igualdad, la alfabetización ética-virtual y la formación en la responsabilidad individual y penal. En todas estas áreas, es importante la participación de los diferentes agentes educativos. Otros elementos fundamentales de prevención del ciberbullying —de los que hemos hablado— son la comunicación familiar (Nikiforou, et al., 2013, p. 5), el apoyo parental (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B71">Perasso, et al., 2020, p. 1</xref>) y el desarrollo de un carácter maduro (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B81">Sarráis, 2013, p. 35 y p. 67</xref>). </p>
			<p>Una estrategia de prevención del ciberacoso que está cobrando interés en los últimos años, es el uso de juegos de rol o serious games que tratan de sensibilizar en el entorno virtual a los adolescentes suscitando la reflexión y el desarrollo de actitudes empáticas (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Del Moral y Villalustre, 2018, pp. 1359-1360</xref>). Son muchas las ventajas que ofrece esta estrategia como recurso de formación ética y moral de la persona (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">López Raventós, 2016, pp. 9-10</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B78">Sáiz, et al., 2020</xref>, p. 516-518; entre otros). Incluso se habla de una corriente educativa llamada Personal and Social Learning &amp; Ethics —PSLE— (Pereira, y otros, 2012) cuyo elemento fundamental es el uso de juegos de rol. Sin embargo, los serious games aunque contribuyen a disminuir la incidencia del ciberbullying, no van a la raíz que origina la conducta violenta. Según se ha explicado, las conductas de ciberacoso pueden aparecer como resultado de importantes carencias originadas durante el proceso de socialización de la persona cuyo origen se remonta a la familia. El propósito de este trabajo es destacar aquellas estrategias de desarrollo personal en las que la familia tiene un importante papel con el fin de que la persona no solo rechace conductas de ciberbullying, sino que sea capaz de manifestarse adecuadamente en la red porque sus relaciones interpersonales son de calidad. Se considera —por tanto— que el desarrollo de estrategias de crecimiento personal es el modo óptimo —no solo de detección— sino de prevención del ciberbullying y cualquier forma de violencia en la red (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Dans, et al., 2019, p. 190</xref>).</p>
			<sec>
			<title>3.1. Estrategias de desarrollo de habilidades sociales en la red frente al acoso</title>
			<p>Actualmente el proceso de socialización de los adolescentes se desarrolla —en gran media— en la red (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B86">Suárez-Álvarez, et al., 2020, p. 14</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B70">Ortega Ruiz, 2020, p. 74</xref>), hasta el punto de que «los jóvenes construyen su identidad social sobre la base de las diversas y abundantes interacciones que mantienen con sus iguales y otros miembros de la comunidad virtual» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B83">Segovia, et al., 2016, p. 156</xref>). Ya es frecuente el uso de términos como convivencia digital (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">López y Sánchez, 2019</xref>) o ciberconvivencia (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B69">Ortega Ruiz, et al., 2012</xref>) para explicar cómo se desarrolla la ciudadanía de los jóvenes. Esto significa que las redes sociales, no solo forman parte del espacio de ocio del adolescente, sino que precisamente a través de ellas, gesta su identidad y aprende a relacionarse con los demás (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">García, et al., 2020, p. 9</xref>).</p>
			<p>Una de las estrategias de prevención del ciberbullying sería la alfabetización ético-virtual (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al., 2017, p. 199</xref>), tanto de los educadores como de los jóvenes. Sin embargo, por muy al día que estén los educadores en este tema, la realidad es que los adolescentes buscan la manera de «saltarse la norma», o frecuentemente se encuentran en una situación de «orfandad digital» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B86">Suárez-Álvarez, et al., 2020, p. 25</xref>) desprovista de criterio alguno. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Dans, et al. (2019, p. 184)</xref> señalan que el inicio en el uso de las redes sociales suele hacerse con el grupo de iguales, con lo cual, cuando los padres son conscientes de los riesgos y amenazas de estas, «llegan tarde». Por ello, además de tener conocimientos sobre el buen uso de las redes, es importante incidir en la relevancia de favorecer una formación integral en los adolescentes cuya base se asienta en la primera infancia, «a través de una oportuna alfabetización emocional-social, y la organización de la prevención en la familia y las instituciones educativas» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Castro, 2013, p. 68</xref>). </p>
			<p>En este sentido, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B91">Yubero, et al. (2017, p. 104)</xref> destacan como estrategias proactivas, el papel de la mediación a través de las TIC, así como la formación en recursos de comunicación en la prevención del ciberbullying. Es interesante la mediación activa/evaluativa a través de la cual los padres —mediante el diálogo— ofrecen orientaciones sobre el uso de las redes. Esta comunicación llevada a cabo en el entorno familiar es esencial porque ahí es donde los adolescentes encuentran el espacio idóneo para desarrollar el criterio propio; un espacio en el que la confianza y la apertura se convierten en elementos clave, y por tanto son también factores protectores frente al ciberbullying (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Machimbarrena, et al., 2019, pp. 49-50</xref>). </p>
			<p>Qué comunica un adolescente y cómo lo hace en el entorno virtual, puede aportar datos de cómo establece relaciones interpersonales y qué concepto tiene —o no— de las mismas. En este sentido, una de las estrategias fundamentales sobre el uso de las redes consiste en sugerir habilidades para que el adolescente sepa manifestarse y relacionarse con los otros adecuadamente, sin recurrir a la violencia. Para que esto sea posible, a la formación en el uso de las redes hay que añadir también estrategias que permitan reflexionar sobre la empatía, el verdadero significado de la amistad, el respeto ante la diferencia, la igualdad y la diversidad (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al., 2017, p. 190</xref>). Sin entrar en el significado de la amistad, pues excede este trabajo, un hecho es que los jóvenes no siempre tienen claro qué significa ser amigo o qué diferencia existe con una persona conocida (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Del Río, et al., 2010, pp. 124-125</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Bohórquez y Rodríguez-Cárdenas, 2014, pp. 327-328</xref>). Esto puede originar una cierta desorientación sobre cuáles son los límites de la intimidad o si el lugar idóneo para compartirla es la red. En este sentido, la familia debe aportar criterio a los adolescentes ayudándoles a reflexionar sobre el verdadero significado de la intimidad y la amistad. </p>
			<p>Es importante destacar que en las redes el usuario crea una identidad, es decir, comparte lo que quiere que los demás vean o sepan. Muchas veces esa información está muy seleccionada e incluso puede no ser real (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Caro, 2015, pp. 190-194</xref>). En ocasiones, la imagen que se quiere dar obedece a una baja autoestima, una baja autopercepción o un sentimiento de inferioridad (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Garaigordobil, 2011, pp. 245-246</xref>) y puede convertirse en un reclamo para posibles acosadores (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Giménez-Gualdo, et al., 2015, p. 18</xref>). También aquí es importante ofrecer orientaciones que permitan al adolescente reflexionar sobre cómo quiere ser percibido, cómo se muestra en la red, y cómo realmente es, pues las redes sociales contribuyen «a diluir las fronteras entre lo personal-privado y lo público-colectivo» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B83">Segovia, et al., 2016, p. 162</xref>). El lugar idóneo para desarrollar estas estrategias es en la familia (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">Grusec y Hastings, 2007</xref>), donde la persona es querida por ser quien es, no por la apariencia que tiene o por su forma de ser. </p>
			<p>En este sentido, como señalan <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B84">Simkin y Becerra (2013, pp. 127-130)</xref>, las habilidades de socialización tienen su fundamento originario en la aceptación personal del hijo. Más allá de la necesaria educación afectivo-emocional (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B85">Suárez y Vélez, 2018, p. 189</xref>), al saberse aceptado y atendido, uno aprende a comunicarse; fruto de esa confianza que invita a la persona a manifestarse. Esto se desarrolla en la familia en primer lugar y después, se va consolidando en las relaciones personales fuera de ese entorno. </p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
			<title>3.2. La formación del carácter como elemento preventivo del ciberbullying</title>
			<p>Otro de los factores fundamentales en la aparición del odio y de la violencia en la red se puede explicar desde la inmadurez, es decir, a la ausencia de la virtud en la personalidad. Por virtud entendemos aquel hábito bueno para la persona. Los hábitos favorecen el crecimiento personal, «consolidan la personalidad de cada individuo y fortalecen su carácter» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B85">Suárez y Vélez, 2018, p. 184</xref>). La virtud predispone hacia el bien, contribuye a la persona a actuar según lo bueno para ella, y, por tanto, forja una personalidad madura (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B53">Martínez Priego, 2018, pp. 155-156</xref>). Los padres desean el bien de los hijos y su crecimiento óptimo, por eso la familia es donde se desarrolla el carácter y la personalidad madura: es el lugar de adquisición de las virtudes por excelencia. Las virtudes van a ser una de las estrategias más sólidas de prevención del ciberbullying porque favorecen el desarrollo de la persona en el entorno virtual (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Harrison, 2016</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B43">Hastings, et al. (2015)</xref> han señalado como capacidades prosociales que previenen la violencia: la empatía, la simpatía, la compasión, el altruismo; la capacidad de consolar, ayudar, compartir, cooperar, ser voluntario y donar. Todas ellas pueden ser manifestaciones de un carácter maduro.</p>
			<p>Algunas virtudes previenen particularmente la aparición de la violencia. En primer lugar, la fortaleza o resiliencia, predispone a rechazar cualquier acción violenta y evitar perpetuar el abuso, bien porque la persona presencia ese abuso en otras personas, o porque lo padece (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B60">Montero y Cervelló, 2019, p. 137</xref>). La templanza es otra virtud que favorece la tolerancia a la frustración y el retardo de la gratificación de las acciones, elementos fundamentales de prevención del ciberacoso. El trabajo de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">López, et al. (2003)</xref> muestra la relación negativa entre el retardo a la gratificación y la conducta antisocial y delictiva en adolescentes. La prudencia —cyber wisdom (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Dennis &amp; Harrison, 2020</xref>)— es un antídoto interesante de prevención de cualquier tipo de violencia (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B77">Rumayor, 2008, pp. 85-93</xref>). Esta virtud favorece que la persona sea capaz de reflexionar sobre las consecuencias de sus actos (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Ahedo, 2021, pp. 54-55</xref>), por lo que posibilita al adolescente manifestarse adecuadamente en la red y reconocer y rechazar situaciones de violencia. Por otra parte, la justicia favorece las relaciones interpersonales de calidad ya que posibilita la empatía: ponerse en el lugar del otro. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Casas, et al. (2013, pp. 583-585)</xref> concluyen que la empatía contribuye a reconocer el valor de la dignidad de la persona y predispone a la persona a rechazar el ciberacoso en cualquiera de sus manifestaciones.</p>
			<p>Por su parte, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B60">Montero y Cervelló (2019, pp. 137-138)</xref> señalan la formación de la identidad moral a través del razonamiento moral como el segundo elemento —junto con la empatía— que favorece la justicia. Esta identidad moral es un elemento preventivo del ciberodio ya que permite al adolescente elaborar un código de valores que sostiene sus juicios morales y conductas. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B65">Naval y Arbués (2015, pp. 42-49)</xref> en su trabajo sobre el Proyecto del Parlamento Cívico añaden a la justicia el respeto, la responsabilidad y la solidaridad como otras virtudes sociales que contribuyen el desarrollo cívico y —por tanto— previenen el ciberacoso.</p>
			<p>En definitiva, las virtudes son uno de los elementos de mayor valor preventivo frente al ciberbullying que se aprenden en la familia, porque propician el desarrollo de un carácter maduro capaz de rechazar y de actuar frente a cualquier signo de violencia en la red.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
			<title>3.3. El perdón como estrategia de crecimiento personal ante el ciberbullying</title>
			<p>Dentro de las estrategias de desarrollo personal, complementando la formación del carácter, se propone el perdón como un acto que previene el ciberbullying (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Dans y Muñiz, 2021, pp. 19-20</xref>). Al respecto, se considera la perspectiva arendetiana del perdón como especialmente sugerente en relación con la prevención del ciberodio como se explicará a continuación. Con frecuencia se ha confundido perdón con sumisión, esa es una de las razones que motivan devolverle su sentido y valor primigenios. Siguiendo a Hannah Arendt, hablar de perdón y trabajarlo es lo que posibilita que haya una auténtica regeneración en las relaciones personales, incluso cuando ha habido un daño, aparentemente irreparable. «La posible redención del predicamento de irreversibilidad (…) es la facultad de perdonar» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Arendt, 2005, p. 256</xref>). </p>
			<p>El perdón es requisito fundamental, no solo para la consolidación de una personalidad madura, sino para que la persona tenga una vida plena. Si bien el perdón puede entenderse únicamente como un gesto formal, en este trabajo se propone que no se reduce a él. Para ello, es necesario en primer lugar distinguir el sentido reparador del perdón, de otro que lo complementa, un sentido regenerador de las relaciones sociales. En este sentido el perdón es esperanzador (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">González y Fuentes, 2012, p. 487</xref>) para el que ha agredido a otro y propicia un nuevo comienzo —permite un nuevo nacimiento diría Arendt (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Bárcena, 2006</xref>)—. Además, el perdón también regenera al que ha sufrido el ciberbullying, ofreciéndole otra perspectiva de la realidad. </p>
			<p>Solo cuando se reconoce la dignidad de la persona, uno es capaz de pedir perdón y de perdonar. El descubrimiento de la dignidad humana se fundamenta en lo que la persona es, no en lo que hace. Señala <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Arendt (2005)</xref> que el amor «posee un inigualado poder de autorrevelación y una inigualada claridad de visión para descubrir el quién» (p. 260) y es lo que posibilita un perdón auténtico. Donde se aprende principalmente el perdón es en la familia, lugar en el que uno es reconocido como un quién de un modo radical. Este aprendizaje va a favorecer las relaciones interpersonales basadas en el respeto y —por tanto— previene la violencia.</p>

	<sec sec-type="conclusions">
			<title>4. Conclusiones</title>
			<p>El presente artículo tenía como objetivo general sugerir estrategias de desarrollo personal en adolescentes para hacer frente a fenómenos de agresividad virtual, especialmente el ciberacoso. Para ello se han tratado de explicar los factores que motivan la aparición y el desarrollo de este. Como todo fenómeno multifactorial, el ciberacoso obedece a la interacción de aspectos individuales y ambientales de la persona. En cuanto a esta última dimensión, se ha abordado especialmente el papel del contexto familiar en el desarrollo del comportamiento violento en el adolescente en Internet. En este sentido, el estilo parental democrático, una buena comunicación familiar y un adecuado apoyo parental se constituyen en factores protectores tanto en la agresión como en la victimización. </p>
			<p>Se entiende que la propuesta de una serie de estrategias de crecimiento personal está orientada a la adquisición de la madurez personal como uno de los medios más eficaces para la prevención del ciberacoso. En todas estas estrategias está presente la educación familiar, aunque también se complementen y consoliden en el ámbito escolar. Si bien es verdad que hay ciertos elementos, tales como los serious games, que contribuyen a la disminución del ciberacoso, se ha de ir a la raíz de dichas conductas violentas para un verdadero ejercicio de prevención de este fenómeno. </p>
			<p>En un primer momento, dicho ejercicio pasa por fortalecer a la familia en su papel socializador, dado que las carencias en este proceso originan a menudo conductas violentas. Estas estrategias de prevención están relacionadas con la aceptación incondicional de los padres hacia los hijos. Ello se traduce en una adecuada comunicación intrafamiliar sobre el uso de las redes y sobre el significado de la amistad, y sobre cómo el adolescente quiere ser percibido y validado por los demás. La familia, donde el hijo es aceptado y querido por quién es, se constituye en un ámbito idóneo para que el joven geste su propia identidad en las redes sociales y pueda manifestarse a los otros a través de ellas. De lo contrario, cuando el hijo no se siente validado suficientemente por su familia, ello puede devenir en un sentimiento de inseguridad y frustración que genera situaciones de abuso de los demás o también ser más vulnerables ante las mismas. </p>
			<p>La educación de las emociones es, a menudo, uno de los pilares fundamentales para la prevención del ciberacoso, tal y como se observa en los programas revisados. Sin embargo, en este trabajo se ha querido apostar por el desarrollo de las virtudes, ya que, al ser disposiciones estables del carácter, permiten un crecimiento personal más sólido. La promoción de la educación del carácter en la familia va unida al desarrollo de una personalidad madura. Así, en un segundo momento se ha propuesto el cultivo de virtudes como la fortaleza o resiliencia, la templanza, la prudencia, la justicia o la empatía, porque son las que pueden prevenir de manera muy especial la aparición de la violencia y van asociadas a las características de una personalidad madura.</p>
			<p>Por último, se ha sugerido el perdón como estrategia de crecimiento personal, no solo para reparar el daño sufrido en situaciones de ciberacoso, sino también para regenerar a las personas afectadas y consolidar su madurez personal. La familia, donde se aprende la radical dignidad humana, va a permitir favorecer el respeto necesario en las relaciones interpersonales y la prevención de la violencia.</p>
			<p>Ante la escasez de estudios o propuestas en torno al perdón como elemento familiar de la formación del carácter que previene la violencia en adolescentes, sería interesante abordar sus repercusiones ante el ciberacoso. Al respecto, se considera necesario llevar a cabo desarrollos y programas sobre la educación del perdón como estrategia de crecimiento personal frente a los fenómenos de odio en la red. </p>

<article-title>Prevention of Cyberhate and Cyberbullying in Adolescents: Family Strategies for Personal Growth</article-title>
</title-group>
<abstract>
				<title>Abstract</title>
				<p>In recent years some researches and protocols for detection and intervention in teenagers virtual aggressive phenomena —cyberhate and cyberbullying among others— have been developed. This article is going to study mainly the second of these phenomena, given its relevance in recent years. There is a clear lack of strategies for the prevention of the cyberbullying phenomenon in the scientific literature. This could explain that many of the strategies carried out don’t prevent violence nor its consequences. With the aim of giving an answer to this need, some strategies some teenagers personal development strategies to face phenomena of virtual aggressivity are proposed. Aggressivity in the net is a fact that appears due to the interaction both of individual and environmental factors. Among the latest is the family context, environment in which the teenager acquires the skills needed for his socialization and personal maturity. In that way the family ambiance, the parent support and the type of communication stablished between parents and sons appears as some of the protecting factors against aggression and victimization in cyberbullying. Besides, the development of a mature personality constitutes one of the fundamental axis for violent behaviour prevention. The socializing role of the family, cultivation of virtues for the formation of the character and personal growing skills, based fundamentally in forgiveness, are proposed as the main educational strategies for prevention of violence among equals in the net.</p>

			<p>Hate and aggressivity occur in relationships both inside the digital world and outside it. The phenomenon of violent communication in nothing new in our society, but the Internet has fostered new ways of expressing this reality, including cyberhate and cyberbullying. The aim of this article is to suggest strategies for personal development to cope with phenomena of virtual aggressivity related mainly to cyberbullying and to promote a mature personality. To do this, the main factors behind the phenomenon of virtual aggressivity in the Internet and cyberbullying are reviewed, with special emphasis on the family setting. As seen below, the main emotional education strategies and programs implemented in recent years for prevention of cyberbullying are also discussed. In the literature review, articles published in relevant journals in both English and Spanish languages in the past five years are considered. Prevention programs carried out in Spain have been taken in account in particular. </p>
			<p>In the scientific literature, a number of cyberbullying intervention and response strategies have been addressed (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Giménez-Gualdo, et al., 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B52">Martín and Martínez-Otero, 2020</xref>). In turn, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al. (2017, p. 198)</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B90">Yudes, et al. (2020)</xref> note the lack of prevention strategies against this phenomenon in recent studies and research on the topic. In terms of cyberbullying intervention and prevention, several strategies and methods have recently been brought to attention, focusing on digital applications (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B49">Lowry, et al., 2017</xref>), emotional intelligence programs (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B63">Motamedi, et al., 2017</xref>), parent training (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B76">Roberto, et al., 2017</xref>), having older students help younger ones (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Berne, et al., 2019</xref>) and programs that promote safe browsing to reduce cyberbullying via WhatsApp based on improving the climate in the classroom and the students’ sense of belonging to the class (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Aizenkot and Kashy-Rosenbaum, 2021</xref>). </p>
			<p>In Spain, the prevention programs by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Avilés (2017)</xref>, and by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Garaigordobil and Martínez-Valderrery (2016</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">2018</xref>), focused on fostering skills related to empathy, active listening and strategies for controlling impulsiveness and rage, etc., stand out in particular. The programs by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B82">Schoeps, et al. (2018)</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Díaz-López, et al., 2019</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Carbonell and Cerezo (2019)</xref>, based on developing emotional intelligence in adolescents, are similar. In turn, the program proposed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Del Rey, et al. (2018)</xref> is aimed primarily at teachers. It is based on the theory of normative social behaviour, the promotion of metacognitive self-regulation skills and reflection on the ideas/beliefs of young people. The program by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B89">Villarejo-Carballido, et al. (2019)</xref> stems from the dialogic model of prevention and conflict resolution, which involves the educational community as a whole. </p>
			<p>In turn, the program proposed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Ferrer-Cascales, et al. (2019)</xref> is based on peer tutoring and also involves the entire educational community. To do this, it uses Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of development, the principles of emotional intelligence theories and positive psychology as a reference. The Prev@cib program by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B68">Ortega, et al. (2019)</xref> has three theoretical frameworks: the ecological model, the theory of empowerment and Hellison’s personal and social responsibility model, which promotes shared responsibility among all the students to resolve this problem. </p>
			<p>Despite all the programs in existence, as seen, there are no proposals that endeavour to link cases of cyberbullying to an educational perspective that fosters character-building and the promotion of virtues and values needed for personal growth. It is true that, within the educational sphere, it is possible to work on prevention that addresses the education in emotions among adolescents. However, such an exercise might be insufficient because emotions themselves are unpredictable. Therefore, the present study highlights the relevance of developing virtues that, as stable character traits, contribute to a more solid personal growth (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B74">Polo, 2013</xref>). Another important factor is educating on how to cultivate deep, healthy interpersonal relationships in which forgiving and being forgiven is a key feature. In relation to forgiveness, the importance of addressing prevention and repair of damage in cases of Internet violence has recently been noted (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B73">Pérez Ferrer and Pérez Vallejo, 2016</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Dans and Muñiz (2021, p. 21)</xref> have recently proposed forgiveness as a learning strategy in cyberbullying situations. To this end, the Arendtian perspective (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Arendt, 2005</xref>) on forgiveness is taken into consideration, distinguishing its restorative and regenerative sense. Thus, it becomes a cornerstone for restoring — repairing — the damaged ties and, in turn, for contributing to personal growth – regenerating the person.</p>

			<title>2. Cyberbullying, hate and aggressivity</title>
			<p>The development of the so-called web 2.0 and the social media entails a wider-reaching communication tool that enables more personalised, interactive messaging. This has prompted a change in the spread of violence/hate that is more qualitative than quantitative. It is not so much that potential violent messages or content reach more people as it is a matter of the scope of the harmful effects and of how the Internet fosters these communicative effects, leading to a spiralling and escalation of violence deriving from the interaction, and possible social divide (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B59">Miró, 2016, p. 95</xref>).</p>
			<p>The latest report on incidents related to hate crimes in Spain (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B58">Ministry of the Interior, 2019, pp. 6-8</xref>) highlights certain data that prompt a reflection on the need to develop appropriate strategies for detection, prevention and intervention in these activities, especially among the very young. According to <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B88">UK Safer Internet Centre (2016)</xref>, 82 % of young people between the ages of 13 and 18 claim to have witnessed some kind of online hate, and 24 % have been the victim of it. This evidences a normalisation of the discourse of violence among young people in the virtual world, which is expressed through support for extremist ideologies, aggressive manners and even as a channel for sharing risky behaviour. </p>
			<p>Within the phenomenon of cyberhate, there are different expressions, such as hate or cyberbullying. The first of these is defined by the <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B75">Royal Spanish Academy</xref> as «antipathy and aversion towards something or someone for which ill will is felt». Hate is referred to as the use of forms of expression such a humiliation towards a person or group based on characteristics related to race, language, religion, ethnic origin, nationality, sexual orientation, gender or disability (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">General Recommendation no. 15 on guidelines for action to combat hate speech, by the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, 2015, p. 18</xref>). Such speech is based on a series of stereotypes or prejudices and is spread over the virtual media, taking advantage of its reach. In this case hate often has a social dimension, with a structured character that is sometimes induced and organised (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B59">Miró, 2016, p. 96</xref>). In turn, cyberbullying refers to conducts such as harassment, belittling and social exclusion involving an intentional use of ITCs in order to cause harm to peers (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B87">Tokunaga, 2010</xref>). This study focuses especially on this phenomenon due to its relevance in recent years. Therefore, firstly, the factors behind its appearance and development are outlined. The characteristics of the family setting are emphasised here. </p>
			<sec>
			<title>2.1. Why cyberbullying occurs. Reasons causing it</title>
			<p>There are diverse theories that attempt to explain the origin of aggression in human beings. According to <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">López-Hernáez (2015, p. 682)</xref>, three main theories can be distinguished. First of all, there are the so-called biological theories, which view aggressiveness as something innate to humans, marked by genetics. </p>
			<p>Then there are the environmental or social theories, which place emphasis on exogenous causes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Berkowitz, 1993</xref>), viewing aggressivity as a learned conduct. Crucial among these theories is the frustration-aggression hypothesis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Dollard, et al., 1939</xref>), in which aggression is seen as a natural response to a situation that causes frustration. Frustration is thus always present in any aggressive behaviour and is directly proportional to the individual’s degree of frustration. From this perspective, frustration is an emotion that arises when there is interference on the path to a goal, which is not achieved. This theory prompted criticism from several sources, leading <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B57">Miller (1941)</xref> to correct the original. Thus, frustration did not necessarily have to be an essential condition for aggression, but could facilitate it. </p>
			<p>Within the context of the present study, cyberbullying can be considered a means of revenge for coping with frustration (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B79">Sánchez, et al., 2016, p. 22</xref>). In this regard, the phenomenon of violent communication is nothing new in our society. Hate, as a social feeling, is related to violence, oftentimes as an expression of frustration in response to certain aspects of society. Adolescents perceive the digital environment as lacking limits and rules, strengthened further by the anonymity afforded by the Internet. In addition, the online environment favours the moral disconnection between the aggressor and the victim (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B91">Yubero, et al., 2017, p. 95</xref>). In this regard, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al. (2017, p. 194)</xref> assert that these conditions lead to a lack of inhibition. These same authors also indicate a series of causes that the aggressor considers for carrying out his/her actions, such as retaliation, revenge, internal motivations such as rage, guilt or jealousy, or a perceived weakness in the victims, among others. </p>
			<p>Finally, interactionist theories discuss the interaction between these factors, the innate and the environmental (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">López-Hernáez, 2015</xref>). In this article, the so-called ecological theory of development, by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Bronfenbrenner (1979)</xref>, which states that conduct is the result of the interaction between a developing individual and his/her environment, will be used as reference. Therefore, the interaction between personal and environmental factors is discussed. In this interaction, special attention is placed on the different micro-systems in which an adolescent is integrated and lives, especially family and school. From this perspective, it is not surprising that phenomena like cyberbullying comprise a series of factors related to the cognitive and socio-emotional nuances of the individual, in addition to the family, community and school environments, which constitute systems that, in turn, interact in the development of the child and/or youth (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B51">Madrid, et al., 2020, p. 69</xref>). One of these systems is the school system, in which certain interpersonal relationships take place that represent the school community. This peer-based social system moulds the individual and social personality of the students, as well as their civic education (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B69">Ortega Ruiz, et al., 2012, pp. 18-20</xref>). However, this study will focus mainly on the family environment for the purposes of understanding violent behaviour in adolescents.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
			<title>2.2. Family factors in cyberbullying</title>
			<p>Family is the most important factor in primary socialization, where children learn the rules of conduct, values and virtues they need for coexistence and to adjust to society (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Bas and Pérez de Guzmán, 2010, p. 45</xref>). In recent years, several authors have assessed the relationship between family variables and bullying or cyberbullying (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Bronfenbrenner, et al., 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Chen, et al., 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B66">Nocentini, et al., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Machimbarrena, et al., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Garaigordobil, 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B72">Pérez-Fuentes, et al., 2019</xref>). In terms of parenting styles, the scientific literature shows that democratic styles protect from cyberbullying whereas authoritarian, permissive or negligent styles are related to both victimization and to aggression (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Cerezo, et al., 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B39">Gómez-Ortiz, et al., 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Machimbarrena, et al., 2019, p. 45</xref>).</p>
			<p>One fundamental aspect is communication in the family. Communication represents not only a protective factor from these phenomena (related to self-esteem or feelings of loneliness), but it is also linked to the conveyance of information and disclosure of problems by children and youths. The study conducted by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B92">Yubero, et al. (2018, p. 150)</xref> notes that adolescents displaying evasive communication with their parents are more involved in problematic behaviours. In turn, family communication acts as a protective factor against violence at school and the consequences of cyberbullying, and also in the strategies used in these cases (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B64">Murphy, et al., 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B67">Offrey and Rinaldi, 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Garcés, et al., 2020</xref>). </p>
			<p>Parental support appears in the scientific literature to be linked to a lower frequency of cyber-aggression in young people (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B54">Martínez, et al., 2019</xref>). According to <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Livazovic and Ham (2019, p. 7)</xref>, a low quality family life can be predictive of cyber-victimization, whereas higher quality family relations negatively predict cyberbullying perpetration. In addition, a lack of quality relations may indicate a high likelihood of taking part in cyberbullying conduct. </p>
			<p>The study conducted by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B71">Perasso, et al. (2020, p. 1)</xref> found that family support represented a protective and mitigation factor against cyberbullying victimization. Dysfunctional homes with conflicts, in which there is a lack of parental support and communication is evasive or offensive, are related to victimization and online aggression (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B55">Martins, et al., 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B62">Moreno-Ruiz, et al., 2018</xref>). Families with strong bonds among their members, consistent rules and a warm, close climate of communication and trust represent environments that protect from cyberbullying (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Machimbarrena, et al., 2019, p. 50</xref>). </p>
			<p>Having seen the main family factors underlying cyberbullying, characteristics relating to psychological maturity will now be discussed. The absence of a mature character can encourage certain behaviours that lead to abusive and bullying relationships towards others. In addition, the promotion of character-building cannot be understood without addressing this concept, which is key to personal growth and family education.</p>
			<p>According to <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B53">Martínez Priego (2018)</xref>, maturity is defined as the «level of harmonic development of the personality in which the chronological age is sufficiently adjusted to the psychological age, intimately connected to the vital reality —the real environment— of the person» (p. 154). Maturity as such is not something that is completed, but rather a question of growth, that must be in keeping with each stage or phase of life and with the conditions arising therein. </p>
			<p>The concept of psychological maturity features three main components, as per <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B61">Morales (2014, p. 2)</xref>: the stance toward work, i.e., the capacity to take on one’s own responsibilities in both academic settings and in regular life, autonomy and, finally, identity, which refers to the adolescent’s knowledge of him- or herself in terms of what defines that person and distinguishes him/her from others. The latter component is particularly important during the adolescent years, when an individual’s identity is being built. Identity is related to self-esteem, self-confidence and emotional stability. An identity that is not consolidated or is vague can hinder vital decision making, one’s life project or interpersonal relations. </p>
			<p>According to <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B81">Sarráis (2013, p. 35 and p. 67)</xref>, the features of psychological maturity are self-esteem, security, realistic self-knowledge, voluntary self-control, emotional independence and inner freedom. On the other hand, immature persons feature a sense or complex of inferiority, insecurity, distrust, hate, rage and frustration, among others. Therefore, many of the aggressive behaviours seen in the Internet are related to a lack of a mature character, with hate, rage and frustration being the most relevant signs. </p>
			<p>A person is mature when he/she is capable of mobilizing personal resources to cope with conditions and challenges posed in life. This entails realism and a strong knowledge of oneself and of reality. In turn, affectivity plays a key role in the development of maturity. It involves knowing oneself, especially one’s affective dynamics and the emotional responses generated in relation to stimuli. Therefore, the influence that parents have on the internal perception of emotional intelligence is crucial to the emotional development of the child or youth (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B80">Sánchez-Núñez, et al., 2020</xref>). Disproportionate responses, for example, can indicate a certain degree of immaturity. In this regard, phenomena such as a low tolerance for frustration or impulsiveness are found among the individual factors that explain the behaviour of many cyber-aggressors (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Bartrina, 2014, p. 388</xref>).</p>
			<p>To continue along the lines of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B53">Martínez Priego (2018, pp. 155-156)</xref>, a mature personality must be based on four traits that can be analysed from an anthropological and a psychological perspective. The first is the ability to cope with strenuous tasks. From a psychological viewpoint, this would be seen as the ability to cope (resilience), and in anthropology, one would speak of strength. The second trait is the capacity to move beyond mere pleasure or immediacy. This would be delayed gratification in psychology, or temperance in anthropology. The third trait is the capacity to recognise others as another self. This refers to an understanding of the personal reality of the other. This is empathy and, anthropologically speaking, it is related to justice. The final trait of a mature personality is the ability to make decisions based on a sense of reality. This is linked to the virtue of prudence.</p>
			<p>As explained, one of the essential cornerstones in prevention of violent conduct in the Internet is the development of a mature personality. The key role of the family in the process of acquiring this maturity has also been noted. Some strategies for personal growth are suggested below, focusing on gaining this maturity as a clear way to preventing possible cyberbullying behaviours.</p>

			<title>3. Personal growth strategies to deal with cyberbullying</title>
			<p><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al. (2017, pp. 198-200)</xref> have highlighted the relevance and also the lack of cyberbullying prevention strategies in the scientific literature. As a proposal in this regard, they discuss the need to work on developing self-esteem, empathy, social and individual principles of human rights, social skills, conflict resolution, prevention of gender violence and equality, online ethics literacy and individual and criminal liability training. In all these areas, it is important for diverse educational stakeholders to be involved. Other essential elements in the prevention of cyberbullying — as mentioned above — are family communication (Nikiforou, et al., 2013, p. 5), parental support (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B71">Perasso, et al., 2020, p. 1</xref>) and the development of a mature character (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B81">Sarráis, 2013, p. 35 and p. 67</xref>). </p>
			<p>One cyberbullying prevention strategy that has drawn attention in recent years is the use of role-playing games, or serious games, which aim to raise awareness among adolescents in online environments, prompting them to reflect on and develop empathetic attitudes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Del Moral and Villalustre, 2018, pp. 1359-1360</xref>). This strategy offers numerous benefits as a resource for training in personal ethics and morals (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">López Raventós, 2016, pp. 9-10</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B78">Sáiz, et al., 2020</xref>, p. 516-518; and others). An educational current has even been created, called Personal and Social Learning &amp; Ethics —PSLE— (Pereira, y otros, 2012) the main element of which is the use of role-playing games. However, while serious games help reduce the rate of cyberbullying, they do not address the root causes of violent conduct. As explained above, cyberbullying behaviours can arise as a result of serious shortcomings during an individual’s socialization process, the source of which lies with the family. The purpose of this study is to outline personal development strategies in which the family plays an important role so that people not only reject cyberbullying behaviours, but they are also able to express themselves appropriately in the Internet because they have high quality interpersonal relations. Thus, developing personal growth strategies is considered the best way not only to detect but also to prevent cyberbullying and any form of online violence (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Dans, et al., 2019, p. 190</xref>).</p>
			<sec>
			<title>3.1. Strategies for developing online social skills to fight bullying</title>
			<p>Adolescents’ socialization process currently takes place to a great degree online (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B86">Suárez-Álvarez, et al., 2020, p. 14</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B70">Ortega Ruiz, 2020, p. 74</xref>), even to the extent that «young people construct their social identity on the basis of diverse and abundant interactions with their peers and other members of the online community» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B83">Segovia, et al., 2016, p. 156</xref>). Terms such as digital coexistence (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">López and Sánchez, 2019</xref>) or cyber-coexistence (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B69">Ortega Ruiz, et al., 2012</xref>) are now commonly used to explain how civic responsibility develops in young people. This means that the social media not only form part of adolescents’ recreational space, but that it is precisely in these networks where they construct their identity and learn to relate to others (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">García, et al., 2020, p. 9</xref>).</p>
			<p>One cyberbullying prevention strategy is online ethics literacy (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al., 2017, p. 199</xref>), for both educators and for young people. However, no matter how up-to-date educators are on the topic, the fact is that adolescents will try to find a way to «get around the rule», or they often find themselves in a situation of «digital orphanhood» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B86">Suárez-Álvarez, et al., 2020, p. 25</xref>) devoid of any criteria at all. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Dans, et al. (2019, p. 184)</xref> note that young people are usually initiated into the use of social media through their peer group, which means that by the time parents become aware of the risks and threats involved, they are «too late». Therefore, in addition to understanding how to correctly use the Internet, it is important to emphasize the relevance of fostering comprehensive education for adolescents based on groundwork done in early childhood, «through proper emotional and social literacy and the organization of prevention within the family and educational institutions» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Castro, 2013, p. 68</xref>). </p>
			<p>In this regard, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B91">Yubero, et al. (2017, p. 104)</xref> highlight the role of mediation through ICTs and training in communication resources as proactive strategies in the prevention of cyberbullying. Active/evaluative mediation in which parents offer guidance — in the form of dialogue — on Internet use is a good option. This kind of communication, which takes place in the family setting, is essential because this is where adolescents find an ideal space to develop their own criteria, a space in which trust and openness become key factors, thus also becoming factors that protect against cyberbullying (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B50">Machimbarrena, et al., 2019, pp. 49-50</xref>). </p>
			<p>What an adolescent communicates in the virtual world and how he/she does so can provide clues as to how he/she establishes interpersonal relations and what concept he/she has (or does not have) of them. Here, one essential strategy on Internet use entails suggesting skills for adolescents to learn how to express themselves and interact with others adequately, without turning to violence. This is only possible if strategies that encourage a reflection on empathy, the true meaning of friendship, respect for differences, equality and diversity are also added to the training on the use of the Internet (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Albert, et al., 2017, p. 190</xref>). The meaning of friendship will not be discussed here, since it falls outside the scope of this study, but it is true that young people often do not have a clear idea of what it means to be a friend, or the difference between friends and acquaintances (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Del Río, et al., 2010, pp. 124-125</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Bohórquez and Rodríguez-Cárdenas, 2014, pp. 327-328</xref>). This can lead to a certain disorientation as to where the limits of intimacy are or whether the Internet is an appropriate place to share this intimacy. In this regard, the family must provide criteria to adolescents, helping them reflect on the true meaning of intimacy and friendship. </p>
			<p>It is important to note that in the Internet, a user name creates an identity, thus transmitting how one wants to be seen or known by others. This information is often very selective and may not even be true (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Caro, 2015, pp. 190-194</xref>). Sometimes, the image conveyed arises from low self-esteem, a poor self-concept or a sense of inferiority (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Garaigordobil, 2011, pp. 245-246</xref>), which may attract possible bullies (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Giménez-Gualdo, et al., 2015, p. 18</xref>). It is also important here to offer guidance that enables adolescents to reflect on how they want to be perceived, how they portray themselves in the Internet and what they are really like, because social media help to «blur the lines between the personal-private, and the public-collective» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B83">Segovia, et al., 2016, p. 162</xref>). The proper place to develop these strategies is within the family (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">Grusec and Hastings, 2007</xref>), where the person is loved for who he/she is, not for his/her appearance or way of acting. </p>
			<p>In this regard, as <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B84">Simkin and Becerra (2013, pp. 127-130)</xref> note, the earliest cornerstone of socialization skills is acceptance of the child as a person. Beyond the basic affective and emotional upbringing (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B85">Suárez and Vélez, 2018, p. 189</xref>), when one feels accepted and cared for, one learns to communicate as a result of this trust, which encourages people to express themselves. This first takes place within the family and later it is consolidated in personal relationships beyond this setting. </p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
			<title>3.2. Character-building as an element in the prevention of cyberbullying</title>
			<p>Another fundamental factor in the appearance of hate and violence in the Internet may be immaturity, defined as a lack of virtue in the personality. By virtue, we mean a habit that is good for the person. Habits foster personal growth and «consolidate the personality of each individual and strengthen their character» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B85">Suárez and Vélez, 2018, p. 184</xref>). Virtue inclines one towards goodness, helping the person to act in a way that is good for him/her, thus forging a mature personality (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B53">Martínez Priego, 2018, pp. 155-156</xref>). Parents want the best for their children and their optimal growth, and for this reason the family is where character and a mature personality develop: it is the ideal place to acquire virtues. Virtues become one of the strongest strategies for preventing cyberbullying because they foster the development of the person in the virtual environment (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">Harrison, 2016</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B43">Hastings, et al. (2015)</xref> noted that pro-social abilities that prevent violence include empathy, sympathy, compassion, altruism, and the ability to console, help, share, cooperate, volunteer and donate. All of these may be expressions of a mature character.</p>
			<p>Some virtues in particular prevent the appearance of violence. Firstly, strength or resilience make one prone to reject any violent actions and avoid perpetrating abuse, either because the person witnesses that abuse in other people or because he/she suffers from it (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B60">Montero and Cervelló, 2019, p. 137</xref>). Temperance is another virtue that fosters a tolerance for frustration and delayed gratification of actions, both of which are essential in preventing cyberbullying. The study by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">López, et al. (2003) </xref>shows the negative relationship between delayed gratification and anti-social and criminal conduct in adolescents. Prudence —or cyber wisdom (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Dennis &amp; Harrison, 2020</xref>)— is an interesting antidote in the prevention of all forms of violence (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B77">Rumayor, 2008, pp. 85-93</xref>). This virtue helps the person reflect on the consequences of his/her acts (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Ahedo, 2021, pp. 54-55</xref>), thus enabling adolescents to express themselves appropriately in the Internet and to reject violent situations. In turn, justice fosters quality interpersonal relations by encouraging empathy: putting oneself in the other person’s place. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Casas, et al. (2013, pp. 583-585)</xref> concluded that empathy helps in recognising the value of personal dignity and makes people reject all expressions of cyberbullying.</p>
			<p>In addition, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B60">Montero and Cervelló (2019, pp. 137-138)</xref> point out that the formation of a moral identity through moral reasoning is the second element — along with empathy — that fosters justice. This moral identity is an element in the prevention of cyberhate because it allows adolescents to create a code of values that upholds their moral judgements and conduct. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B65">Naval and Arbués (2015, pp. 42-49)</xref>, in their study on the Civic Parliament Project, add respect, responsibility and solidarity to justice as other social virtues that contribute to civic development and thus, to preventing cyberbullying.</p>
			<p>In sum, virtues are one of the elements with the greatest value in preventing cyberbullying that are learnt in the family, because they foster the development of a mature character capable of rejecting and responding to any sign of violence in the Internet.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
			<title>3.3. Forgiveness as a personal growth strategy in response to cyberbullying</title>
			<p>Within the strategies of personal development, in addition to character-building, forgiveness is proposed as an act that prevents cyberbullying (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Dans and Muñiz, 2021, pp. 19-20</xref>). In this regard, the Arendtian perspective on forgiveness is considered particularly suggestive in relation to the prevention of cyberhate, as explained below. Forgiveness has often been confused with submission, which is one of the reasons why it must be returned to its original meaning and values. According to Hannah Arendt, talking about and striving for forgiveness is what allows there to be an authentic regeneration of personal relations, even when seemingly irreparable damage has been done. «The possible redemption from the predicament of irreversibility (…) is the faculty of forgiving» (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Arendt, 2005, p. 256</xref>). </p>
			<p>Forgiveness is a fundamental requirement, not only in consolidating a mature personality but also in enabling the person to live a full life. While forgiveness may be understood as a mere formal gesture, it should not be reduced to this. Therefore, the restorative meaning of forgiveness must first be distinguished from its complementary side, a sense of regenerating social relations. In this regard, forgiveness is encouraging (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">González and Fuentes, 2012, p. 487</xref>) to those who have harmed others, prompting a new start, or enabling a new birth, as Arendt would say (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Bárcena, 2006</xref>). Furthermore, forgiveness also regenerates the victims of cyberbullying, offering them a different perspective on reality. </p>
			<p>Only when one recognises a person’s dignity can one ask for forgiveness and forgive. The discovery of human dignity is based on what a person is, not on what a person does. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Arendt (2005)</xref> notes that love «possesses an unequalled power of self-revelation and an unequalled clarity of vision for the disclosure of who» (p. 260) and makes authentic forgiveness possible. Forgiveness is learnt primarily within the family, where one is recognised as who in a radical way. This learning is what fosters interpersonal relations based on respect and therefore, it prevents violence.</p>

			<title>4. Conclusions</title>
			<p>The general aim of this article was to suggest strategies for personal development in adolescents in order to combat phenomena of online aggressivity, especially cyberbullying. To do this, the factors giving rise to the appearance and development of violence were explained. Like all multi-factor phenomena, cyberbullying is the result of interacting individual and environmental aspects on a person. In terms of environmental aspects, the role of the family setting was addressed in particular in the development of violent behaviour in adolescents in the Internet. In this regard, democratic parenting, good family communication and proper parental support represent factors that protect from aggression and also victimization. </p>
			<p>A series of personal growth strategies is offered, focusing on acquiring personal maturity as one of the most effective means of preventing cyberbullying. Family upbringing is present in all these strategies, although they could also be supplemented and strengthened in school settings. While it is true that certain elements such as serious games help reduce cyberbullying, it is important to get to the roots of this violent behaviour in order to truly be able to prevent this phenomenon. </p>
			<p>First of all, this means supporting the family in their socializing role, given that shortcomings in this process often lead to violent behaviour. These prevention strategies are related to parents’ unconditional acceptance of their children. This gives rise to appropriate communication within the family about Internet use and about the meaning of friendship and how the adolescent wants to be perceived and validated by others. Families in which the children are accepted and loved for who they are offer an ideal setting in which young people can create their own identity in the social media and present themselves to others in these media. If, on the other hand, children do not feel sufficiently validated by their family, this can lead to a sense of insecurity and frustration, which generates situations of abuse of others and also makes them prone to such abuse. </p>
			<p>Teaching emotions is often one of the most important aspects in preventing cyberbullying, as observed in the programs reviewed. However, this study focused on the development of virtues because they foster stronger personal growth, as stable character traits. The promotion of character-building in the family is linked to the development of a mature personality. Thus, secondly, cultivating virtues such as strength or resilience, temperance, prudence, justice and empathy was proposed, given that these can be highly effective in preventing the appearance of violence and are related to features of a mature personality.</p>
			<p>Finally, forgiveness was proposed as a personal growth strategy not only for repairing the harm done in cyberbullying situations but also to regenerate the people affected and to consolidate their personal maturity. The family, where radical human dignity is learnt, fosters the respect required in interpersonal relations and in the prevention of violence.</p>
			<p>Given the limited number of studies and proposals relating to forgiveness as a character-building element within the family for the prevention of violence in adolescents, it would be interesting to discuss the influence of forgiveness on cyberbullying. Hence, it is deemed necessary to develop programs on educating in forgiveness as a strategy for personal growth to combat hateful phenomena in the Internet. </p>
