Multi-screening in Early Childhood: Families in the 21st Century
Abstract
Nowadays, television keeps struggling to be the most watched screen by children in early childhood (91.7 %). This quantitative (survey study) and qualitative research (discussion groups), which has 165 families residing in Spain and with children between the ages of 4 and 5 years as study subjects, shows that parents are sensitized to the content their children have access to and take an active role in the selection of the information which their children consume. Nevertheless, the families point out the difficulty in having full control of the situation. Even though children are frequently accompanied by the parents during the viewing, 77 % of the families claim that the shows they watch are not family friendly. Nonetheless, the study shows an increased awareness in sexism, even if no difference in the degree of its perception has been found. It is worth pointing out that, conversely to the perception of sexist content (ANOVA, f = 2.140, p = .121), there are significant differences associated to the gender of the child and the degree of concern about sexist content (ANOVA, f = 7.179, p = .008). Hence, families with daughters are more inclined to reject this kind of shows.
