DISINTERMEDIATION OF THE AUDIOVISUAL SECTOR

The audiovisual sector is in the throes of ever-faster transformation. Technology transforms business groups, production methods, business models, creative processes and means of access. The boundaries are blurred: radio is visual, television is textual, series resemble films, and businesses and professionals are faced with the challenge of taking such integration on board.

In the sphere of regulation, and uniquely in the European case, it seems clear that public policies are directed at the transnational space. There are several notable challenges in this regard, namely:

- Market operation surveillance, mainly to ensure a plurality of offerings and to safeguard users’ rights.

- The development and planning of new services arising from technical transformations.

- The position of public service media operators as market-driving and market-balancing instruments.

For producers and operators in the audiovisual sector, the concurrence of technical development, audience transformation and competition raises a variety of issues:

- Producing the right quantity and quality of content for an audience that has multiple offerings and access platforms available to it.

- Making production profitable, reaching the break-even point in the business model (type, profitability and client).

- Managing audiences in the production and broadcasting of content.

- Offering a user experience in line with the demands of multiplatform audiences.

The aim of this monographic issue is to showcase current research on these topics. Special consideration will be given to works presenting case studies and those having a European or Ibero-American perspective. However, this preference does not exclude any other research or study consistent with this proposal.
