This article aims to present a first analysis of the achievements of the archaeological interventions on Povoado da Fonte Quente (Tomar, Portugal). Although the excavation process revealed the lack of clear stratigraphic sequences, a valuable artefactual group was recovered. The study of this material has led to the identification of a housing settlement with which was uninterruptedly occupied since the second half of the 3rd millennium BC until the end of the 3rd millennium and the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. This period coincides with the Bell Beaker culture. The Bell Beaker occupation is clearly defined not only by the typical pottery, but also by the presence of several devices or artefacts of an ideotechnical nature: the eyed idols. The article approaches the eyed idols through the analysis of these representations in different cultural expressions of the archaeological registry since the end of 5th millennium B.C until the 2nd millennium BC. This is an “ideogram” defined and articulated in an ideological code, which indicates homogeneity of the symbolic and ideological patterns and reflects the existence of a social organization within a communal system, of a parental nature, enclosed within the Neolithic tradition. It is the result of a long formation process which begins at the end of the 5th millennium and finishes at the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. This system will be replaced with the appearance of new elements which strengthen the new social status, critical in the incipient processes of social differentiation and hierarchization. Lastly, the article emphasizes the importance of the archaeological site within the intraregional and supraregional scene during the 3rd millennium BC and beginning of the 2nd millennium BC as one of the most developed sitings from the interior of Extremadura during the Calcolithic Age. Ultimately, the article highlights its boosting effect in the projection of specific elements of this culture.
