ABSTRACT: As opposed to the exclusive and excluding type of historiography as a national and even nationalistic practice, the possibility of a transnational type of history has recently arisen. Without renouncing certain classical "manners" of historiography, it allows for less purist and more far-reaching reflection. In this article, after tackling the intímate relationship between historiography and the process of nation building on the one hand, and the latest debates on the role and content of history in educational systems, on the other hand, an in-depth study is made of the nature, character, methodology and contents of transnational history. Key words: Historiography, Nationalism, National History, Nationalist History, Transnational History.
