In Roman times, part of the western Meseta was inhabited by the Vettones. This tribe is often described as Celtic by the historians. The limits of Vettonia have never been clarified but we know that this country expanded, with fluctuations according to the ages, on the modern Spanish province of Salamanca, the major part of the province of Ávila, the eastern half of province of Cáceres, as well as certains parts of the provinces of Badajoz and Toledo, and an eastern strip in Portugal. This article deals with this problem of delimitation of Vettonia. We shall try to clarify the limits of the Vettones before the Roman conquest. Then, we shall intend to study the changes of the country's boundaries under Roman rule, in the context of the administrative integration of the Vettones in the Roman province of Lusitania.
