Abstract

The first analysis of Pollen and Spore assemblages from a coal and a carbonaceous clay from the Arenas del Rey (Province of Granada) are given in this paper. Non presence of Taxodiaceae-Cupresaceae and predominance of Pinus haploxylon and Pinus diploxylon type among the winged conifers, are the most significative character. The mammalian fauna points out a Messinian ( = Turolian) age for the palynological assemblages. Deposition of coals and carbonaceous clay took place in a lacustrine environment with herbaceous vegetation, predominantly Graminae, Compositae and some tree, enclaves. An arboreous belt surround probably this area. The palynological assemblage allow outline provisionally a temperate to lightly warm climate. The sporo-pollinic assemblage from Arenas del Rey show an interim position between the Cerdaña (Province of Lérida) and Orignac (French) localities, both of "Pontien" age.
