Abstract

Several elemental and advanced biometrical techniques have been used in order to differentiate between two populations: a fossil one and another recent one of the gastropod genus Sphaeronassa LOCARD, with the result that they can be considered as clearly distinct. The authors propose to separate both populations, by considering them as different subspecies of the Sphaeronassa mutabilis (LINNE): S. mutabilis mutabilis(LINNE) for the living subspecie and S. mutabilis praeinflata (CHAVAN), for the neogen subspecie. Biometrical methods have proved to be a powerful instrument that have provided an objective method for the solution to this problem, which otherwise might not have been reached.
