Representations of Africa in the Literary Production of some West African Women Writers of the 21st Century
Abstract This article examines the representation of some West African countries in the literary production of four francophone women writers; these authors have been born in Senegal or Mali and have lived temporarily or permanently in Europe. The spatial distance from their mother countries, as well as the discovery of new realities, allow them to value or reject certain African and European phenomena and peculiarities. The identity of these cosmopolitan citizens is conformed as they become familiar with the cultures and customs of other peoples, and this process involves both the acceptance and refusal of the encountered personalities. The observation of the new circumstances and ways of life, together with the acquisition of knowledge, allow them to reclaim more individual rights, from fields as varied as the associative, political or literary writing.
