Return to the Childhood Home: Reconstructing the Past and the Identity in Maison-Mère, by Anaïd Demir
Abstract French writer of Armenian origin Anaïd Demir published in 2022 the novel Maison-Mère (‘House-Mother’, in English), of clear autobiographical inspiration. In this work, the author confronts her multicultural and polyglot identity, being the daughter of Armenians from Turkey who emigrated to France in the 1960s, as well as the memories of the past in a house located in a small town on the outskirts of Paris, to which she returns in a rough period of her life. In this paper we will analyze the novel, first of all, from the spatial point of view, through the different meanings and functions of the house. Then, we will analyze the role of the mother as a trigger for the narrative, as well as other female characters. Finally, we will see how the Armenian identity is integrated in the book through language and the recognition of the family legacy.
