The Banquillo Affair of 1705 and the Grandees’ Opposition to Bourbon Changes: From Anecdote to a Defence of the Mystical Body of the Monarchy

Abstract

The aim of this article is to put in context the courtly rebellion against Philip V in 1705, the so-called Banquillo affair. I argue that this episode belongs to a tradition of aristocratic rebellion against royal tyranny that can be traced to at least the beginning of the 17th century.
