Gaudia verae vitae and carpe diem in Martial’s epigrams
Abstract
Time escapes and everyday life distracts us with useless pursuits. Nothing essential should be delayed between a tomorrow that does not exist and such a fugitive today. So says Marcial in a set of epigrams always aimed to encourage us to squeeze the present and pursue an ideal of life that borders on the topic of mediocritas aurea.
