Abstract

Teeth may also be used as an instrument of defense or aggression. Human bitemarks can be founded both in victims and victimizers, but these injuries rarely are analyzed by criminologists or by professionals who study the behavior of the offender. While important for criminalistics and forensic dentistry, human bitemarks can also provide additional information according to the context in which the injury was caused. The existing literature about the theme was reviewed, in order to collect information that demonstrates the utility of the analysis of human bitemarks in criminological research. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of the main topic, where a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary management and scientific rigor are needed, providing new concepts and theories in criminology based on common elements among criminologists, crime scene investigators, psychiatrists, psychologists and forensic dentists.
