Historical development of the relation between National Museum of Peruvian Culture and its context: a view from the perspective of the cultural economy

Abstract

This research studied the relationship between the management of the National Museum of Peruvian Culture (MNCP) and context throughout its history. This relationship was studied in the light of the economy of culture. This investigation described the history MNCP management, cultural values that projected and how they were developed through interaction with their context described. The MNCP ?founded in 1946? is one of the oldest museums in the country. During its history it has had a close relationship with the academic and cultural development of the country. It is notable for the large collection of folk art pieces reflecting national cultural diversity. Despite its trajectory and work in recent years it has not had the public and recognition it should. This study sought to help the MNCP be consolidated as an updated space, aware of its history and its potential. It was used the method of analysis-synthesis, with a qualitative approach and not experimental type. Information was collected by literature review and semi-structured interviews with managers and employees of the museum. Six periods of the history of MNCP were identified, described and analyzed: 1) Antecedents 2) First years of MNCP (1946-1956); 3) Anthropology and archeology at the MNCP (1956-1992); 4) The history of art and rebirth IAP (1992-2003); 5) Folk Art as Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003-2014); and 6) Current period (2014-2016). This research led to the conclusion that the MNCP is the result of a historical process in which the museum management are closely related, cultural values it projects and it context. It was concluded that it is essential that the MNCP place society and its transformations in the center of their work, to become a more dynamic, proactive adapted to the public and to their environment and their problems. Finally, it was concluded that the Economy of Culture is a useful tool for the study of management and its historical development MNCP.
