Voices of the Land: Salmantin’s Rural Identity in 20th Century Photography
Abstract
The following article analyzes the documentation of daily life in the towns of the Sierra de Francia during the 20th century through the work of four key photographers: Hielscher, Anderson, Boubat and Müller. Each one captured different facets of rural life, reflecting the authenticity and values of a community in direct contact with its environment. Hielscher provided a technical and rigorous look, showing architecture and landscapes from an almost scientific approach. Anderson highlighted human interactions, with a sensitivity that reveals the ties between inhabitants and their land. Boubat, in his poetic and humanistic style, captured the essence of the festivities and the rhythm of daily life, while Müller focused on visual ethnography, with careful composition that highlights cultural elements.
