From the Rubber Tree to the State: Governance, Territory, Indigenous Peoples, and the Rubber Economy in the Formation of the State of Acre

Abstract

This article examines the interactions among Indigenous peoples, settlers, and the Brazilian government during the formation of the state of Acre, focusing on the expansion of the rubber economy and the expansionist and integrationist policies directed toward the peoples of the region. The intense migration of rubber tappers and the conflicts arising from the exploitation of rubber trees fueled territorial disputes among Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia. The establishment of rubber estate outposts and the consolidation of the rubber plantation system created encounters in which Indigenous peoples acted as essential guides, interpreters, and mediators, providing crucial territorial knowledge for rubber extraction. The article reinterprets this process from an ethnohistorical perspective, emphasizing Indigenous agency in the formation of alliances, confrontations, and strategies that shaped the regional occupation. By highlighting the history of the Yawanawa and Noke Koi peoples, it offers a critical reassessment of traditional narratives, underscoring Indigenous protagonism in the historical and territorial formation of Acre.
