From Brazil with a “z” to Brasil with an “s”: The Context of the 1824 Constitution

Abstract

This article analyzes the Brazilian Constitution of 1824 in order to identify, within this constitutional text, the legacy of the 1689 Bill of Rights and to highlight British influence on the drafting of this constitutional charter. It also seeks to characterize the institutionalization of state powers and to examine the model of citizenship established in the context of the continued existence of slavery. To this end, the study discusses, based on specialized historiography, the role and interests of the multiple political forces operating during the period. Drawing on the constitutional text itself, the article undertakes an interpretive analysis focused on Articles 6 and 7, as well as Articles 178 and 179, particularly sections I through XXV of the Constituição Política do Império do Brazil of March 25, 1824.
