'CliFi' movies or the profitability of saving the planet

Analysis of the production, distribution and exhibition’s contexts in Spain between 2000 and 2019

Abstract

Twenty-first century society is facing the climate emergency, a scientific phenomenon that has been strongly incorporated into the political, media and social spheres. Its inclusion in the UN Development Goals, the increase in news coverage and the recent mobilisation of citizens have acted as catalysts for a narrative traditionally marked by more shadows than lights. In our research we propose an agenda study on the incorporation of the 'Cli-Fi' (climate fiction) content in Spanish movie theatres between 2000 and 2019. Based on the technical specifications of the 92 titles that make up the sample, we offer a study of the variables that delimit the contexts of production, distribution and exhibition, with the aim of detecting a possible thematisation, the consolidation of working groups or their profitability in economic terms and their success in international competitions. The results reveal the maturity achieved by climate fiction in the film industry, with a stabilised, recognised and profitable production, despite the atomisation of the teams responsible for the projects analysed.
