Analysis of insomnia pharmacotherapy dispensation in community pharmacy 2015-2022

Abstract

Insomnia is a recurring consultation in community pharmacies (FC) and the proposed hypothesis affirms that in recent years there have been changes in dispensing profile of medicines and food supplements (MCA) whose only indication is insomnia treatment. Thus, the present study describes MCA dispensing from 2015 to 2022, based on the care activity of three FCs in Castilla y León, and dispensations that require medical prescription (MCR) and non-prescription medicines together with food supplements (MSR) were analyzed. A total of 32 875 records were collected, showing 52 % increase in MCA dispensing (R2 = 0,97), with no changes in MCR prescription profile. In contrast, melatonin dispensation as food supplement increased from 10 % of MSR 2015 to 51 % 2022. This observation is in agreement with the growing importance of exogenous administration of this hormone as an active ingredient in self-medication drugs. Therefore, our results suggest a change in patients demand towards non-prescription medicine in insomnia, reinforcing the care role of counselling provided by pharmacists to prevent, treat and give visibility to poor sleep quality as a public health problem.
