The development of a social matrix for impact assessment of biofuels

Abstract

Despite the large number of studies dedicated to the impact assessment of biofuels, the social aspects of their sustainability remain overlooked. This paper aims at presenting a novel method of systematic gathering of social aspects related to the sustainability of technoscientific policies and projects, using ethanol as a case study. We conclude that the social matrix, developed from a systematic review of the available literature, is a valuable tool for collecting information in a research field such as biofuels’ sustainability, characterised by a lack of primary data, consensus and homogeneity in the scientific approach of the subject.
