La burocracia episcopal en la Hispania tardorromana y visigótica (siglos IV-VII)

Resumen

RESUMEN: El análisis de la formación, la consolidación y el funcionamiento institucional de la iglesia cristiana, en tanto que incipiente institución temporal, constituye una tarea de sumo interés para el historiador de los periodos tardorromano y visigótico. Los testimonios documentales, fundamentalmente de origen eclesiástico, hacen del estudio de la burocracia episcopal hispánica de los siglos IV al VI1 un vehículo extraordinario para profundizar en su conocimiento. El monopolio del oficio episcopal en el gobierno temporal de la iglesia, la imprecisión de las fronteras entre los cargos y las funciones de la burocracia episcopal o el uso sistemático de personal laico en sus actividades gubernamentales nos informan de la irregular burocratización de la iglesia hispánica hasta la séptima centuria, momento de la definitiva implantación de los preceptos del concilio de Calcedonia en materia de institucionalización eclesiástica y de la manifestación de los elementos más visibles de la transición de las antiguas formas del cristianismo a las que prevalecieron en época medieval.ABSTRACT: It is extremely interesting for the historian of the Late Roman and Visigothic periods to analyse the formation, consolidation and institutional workings of the early Christian Church, as a temporal institution. Available documentary testimony, which comes mainly from ecclesiastical sources, means that we can greatly develop our knowledge of the Church at this time by studying episcopal bureaucracy in Hispania between the fourth and the seventh centuries. We know from the episcopal office's monopoly in the temporal government of the Church at that time, the unclear boundaries between posts and functions in episcopal bureaucracy, and the systematic use of lay people, that the bureaucratisation of the Hispanic Church was irregular until the seventh century. This was when the precepts regarding the institutionalisation of the Church that were established at the Council of Chalcedonia were fmaliy introduced and when the more visible features of the transition from the ancient forms of Christianity to those prevalent in the Middle Ages became manifest.
